Springtime in the Smokies

As winter begins to recede and the days grow longer, Great Smoky Mountains National Park stirs back to life. Spring arrives slowly but steadily here, creeping up the slopes in layers—dogwoods blooming low in the valleys while snow may still linger along the higher ridgelines. On the Tennessee side of the park, towns like Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge serve as gateways into this vast, forested expanse, offering a blend of natural access and small-town energy that shapes many visitors’ first impressions of the Smokies.

66th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, 2016

Springtime in the Smoky Mountains means the hour of the wildflower has arrived in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. To celebrate, thousands of people from all over the world have come to the area to join in the annual 5-day Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, for a glimpse of magic.

The pilgrimage is from April 19-23, and offers more than 150 different classes, talks, evening programs, guided trail hikes, walks and even motorcades to all the best places to see the most wildflowers. Most events are by registration, with a few presentations open to the general public.

Springtime in the Smokies 2015

It’s an earthy time of year in the Smoky Mountains right now. The springtime period after Easter marks the magical time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park when millions of wildflowers bloom for a brief time, one step ahead of the trees blooming, which will cover the skies above with foliage and plunge the forest floor back into deep shade.

For a few weeks, 1,500 species of wildflower cover the ground everywhere, and April 21-25, 2015, marks the time of the 65th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage. (more…)
