Festival of Nations at Dollywood: The World Comes to Visit

Each year starting in March and going into April, Dollywood stages its month-long celebration of world music, food, culture and entertainment known as Festival of Nations.

Reminding us that around the world, “we all smile in the same language,” Dollywood seeks out and hosts top talent acts from different countries in a lavish smorgasbord of color and imagination.

UPDATE 2024: Dollywood is currently not holding this festival.

Costume is everywhere, and everywhere different. Performers on huge, bendy stilts walk the streets of the theme park, swaying down to engage with visitors. Music beats from the various stages. The smells of exotic foods are in the air. Right here in the depths of Appalachian history, all the world has come to visit.

And the entertainers aim to get your attention. Heart-pounding, spellbinding, gripping feats of dance, acrobatics, drums, unimaginable voices and rhythms, all combined in perfect theatrical precision, compete with the visual feast all around of costumes made from all the colors of the world.

If you’re in the area either side of Easter time, as spring time starts to wake the place up and the first stirrings of growth and excitement begin, make sure to catch some of the acts performing at Festival of Nations. That was the point we wanted to make, in case you didn’t guess!

Read our blog write-ups of recent Festivals here and here. And here’s the Dollywood Festival of Nations page.

Major Springtime Events in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Springtime in the Smoky Mountains is a nature lover’s paradise. Two major events occur in April and May, centered around Great Smoky Mountains National Park. These are the annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, based in the national park close to Gatlinburg, followed by the annual Wilderness Wildlife week, based in Pigeon Forge.

Both events offer expert guidance to some of the most breathtaking and rare highlights of the seasonal changes.

Major Springtime Events in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage

The springtime period after Easter marks the magical time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park when millions of wildflowers bloom for a brief time, one step ahead of the trees blooming, which will cover the skies above with foliage and plunge the forest floor back into deep shade.

For a few weeks, 1,500 species of wildflower cover the ground everywhere, and April 21-25, 2015, marks the time of the 65th Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage. Participants come from around the world to catch sight of rare wildflowers and to learn more in the 150 or so classes and treks provided by organizing groups and Park rangers during the 5-day occasion.

The weather is mild, and often moist, and it’s a perfect time to breathe in the great outdoors and take a guided tour or hike. Participation in all events is by pre-registration, and many people plan a year ahead of time.

For full information, see our guide to The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Wilderness Wildlife Week

For a week in May, Pigeon Forge fields a rich array of programs that are free to the public and celebrate the rich history, culture and natural features of the area, particularly in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The event draws a variety of experts from all over, and the range of classes, demonstrations, lectures, hikes and fun activities jammed into 7 or 8 days is such that it takes about a 60-page brochure to list them all. Many of the events are designed as one-hour classes, along with guided hikes in the national park.

The spacious LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge is the headquarters for Wilderness Wildlife Week, a p[perfect place since as many as 100 exhibits and booths may be hosted to deal with the various subjects of the week.

From photography to fishing, from music and art to hiking and nature study, and all the relevant natural sciences, topography and lore, Wilderness Wildlife Week offers a vastly diverse display of the wild, its plant life and its inhabitants. Something in all the programs is there to captivate everyone.

The event is aimed at being fun for kids, and makes a great school and home-school field trip. For more information, see our guide to Wilderness Wildlife Week.

Other Springtime Events in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge

Of course, there are many more things happening at this time in the area, from festivals to shows to attractions. For a calendar to the main events of this season, see our guide to Festivals and Events in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Visiting the Area

Springtime in the Smoky Mountains is a magical time filled with many events and growing excitement, in this transition time from winter to summer. After Easter, it’s also a slow time for traveling, with kids at school, and no holidays in sight just yet.

This is a good time for off-season deals, and with millions of Americans within a day’s drive of Gatlinburg, our last-minute specials on cabin rentals can be useful for a weekend getaway on the spur of the moment.

We have Gatlinburg cabin rentals and Pigeon Forge cabins – we’re there wherever your favorite place is to stay. We also have Wears Valley cabins on the “Quiet Side of the Smoky Mountains”. And of course, we have many pet friendly cabins in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge

Most people plan their trips long in advance of course, which is certainly the way to treat the two events above – some people plan a year ahead based on the timing of these events. And booking the perfect cabin is best done long in advance also – see our Tips on Finding the Best Cabin for more.

The month of May is the most popular month for weddings in the Smoky Mountains. And this is an area hugely popular for weddings, and all things romance. See our guide to Smoky Mountain Weddings for more information on this most important of days – and also learn about our perfect Gatlinburg honeymoon cabins for your stay after the ceremony.

But if you can’t make springtime in the Smokies, everything is still just fine, because any time is a good time to be in the Smoky Mountains!

Each day of the event is packed with classes taught by renowned quilting instructors that cater to every skill level from beginners all the way to advanced quilters.

The instructors come from all over the U.S. to share their knowledge and spur a love of quilting in others, and it’s a great resource to take advantage of if you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the intricacies of the art of quilting. Some classes are centered on specific themes, while others are focused on general quilting practices and techniques. Be sure to browse the list and register early to secure your spot.

The entire event is FREE and open to the public, although for a fee and by appointment you can have an expert appraise your own quilt.

Several times a day during the festival, experts present the “Antique Quilt Bed Turnings”, which go beyond the artisanship and tell the  stories of the people and events behind the making of a quilt. Humor is never far away. Dinner lectures and an evening Dinner Social elevate the festival to celebration.

A Mountain Quiltfest is held at the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge, at 2986 Teaster Ln, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863. Classes usually begin a day before the public show. Apart from custom appraisals, all activities are free. For more information visit A Mountain Quiltfest web page or call 865-453-8574.

Improv Comedy Fest & Magic Carnival, in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge

In early March of each year, two events occur, usually right together and frequently on the same weekend. You have to choose – or juggle – between magic and comedy, as Gatlinburg hosts a comedy improv festival and Pigeon Forge hosts a magic convention.

The Winter Carnival of Magic happens in the world-class setting of the Country Tonite Theatre in Pigeon Forge. The 3-day convention features lectures, a dealer’s room, a close-up competition, a stage competition and 2 evening shows.

Over in Gatlinburg at Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre, the highly acclaimed, Broadway-class comedy troupe turns the stage over to a gathering of performers from across the country. The 2-day Gatlinburg Improv Fest offers workshops at low cost, including one free, catering to all levels of skill. The Fest is a feast, of course, of funny performances and highly original work.

So it looks as if you can have either a spellbinding weekend of magic or a sidesplitting time of humor, or maybe even both if you plan your time well. The two towns are just down the road from each other, and driving between them, or taking the trolley, is simple.

See our write up of a recent occurrence of these two highly unique events: Winter Carnival of Magic & Gatlinburg Improv Fest, 2014

The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park exhibits a wildflower explosion in spring. This unique ecosystem, with abundant water and more than 100 species of trees, is also home to more than 1,500 species of wildflower. But these unique and colorful flowers only appear for a short time – as the ground is warmed by the springtime sun, and before the trees fully leaf out, which plunges the forest floor back into shade. But this short window of just a few weeks produces a miraculous display of millions of vibrant flowers.

2025

This year is the 75th Annual (!) Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it happens April 23-26, 2025. Registration opens March 1st.

The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage annual event has been held since 1950 each year in spring, usually in late April – dates vary according to climate. The Pilgrimage ranks as the best way to explore many of the wildflower highlights. Led by experts and park rangers, the Pilgrimage draws people from all over the world to view the wildflower profusion.

Programs in the Wildflower Pilgrimage

The week-long Wildflower Pilgrimage offers a variety of classes, guided hikes along scenic trails, evening programs, seminars, motorcades, and leisurely walks, all taking advantage of some of the best places and vantage points for viewing the magic of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The programs offer a chance to enjoy the area up-close, and the benefit of visiting experts who share their unique knowledge and skills. The diverse programs include many on birding – a very popular aspect of the Pilgrimage – as well as ecology and earth science, edible flora, understanding salamanders and other native wildlife, and discovering the many trees, shrubs, wildflowers, ferns, and fungi that reside in the area.

If you’re interested in journaling or have a knack for photography, the Pilgrimage includes programs for both. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited parks in the nation. Along with a diverse culture, the area has a long and rich history, which is discussed and explored in the park history programs.

For an idea of what to expect, a few of recent events include an Edible Mushroom Walk, Wildflower Walks, Beginners Photography Workshop, Wildfire Walk, Chimney Tops, Birding Photography, Night Owl Prowl, Black Bear and Wild Hog Walk, Nature Journaling, Salamander Foray, Tree and Shrub Identification Walk, and many, many more.

Wildflower Pilgrimage Contact and Registration Information

Participation in the Wildflower Pilgrimage is by registration only, and this usually opens in February on the Wildflower website. In recent years registration has sold out in the first weekend! Organizers are still trying to find ways to expand the Pilgrimage, but currently it remains highly sought after and filled by less than 1,000 participants – it’s a rare reward of exceptional value.

Registration and full information is available online at the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage website, and also at the Mills Conference Center in Gatlinburg.

The Wildflower Pilgrimage happens rain or shine, and events are never canceled due to inclement weather, unless it’s a threatening severe weather event. Events cannot be rescheduled should it become necessary to cancel due to weather.

Here’s a short clip about the event:

Scottish Festival and Games in the Smoky Mountains

Every spring the city of Maryville, TN plays host to one of the most unique events of the year: the Scottish Festival and Games. Held on the historic campus of Maryville College in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, this one-of-a-kind festival is a celebration of all things Scottish. It’s fun for the whole family, whether you don your clan’s tartan every weekend, or you know very little about Scottish heritage.

UPDATE 2022: The Festival has moved to Townsend Visitor Center (see our feature story)

Scottish Festival and Games in the Smoky Mountains

The culture of Scotland is so much more than kilts and accents, and the Scottish Festival and Games is the perfect place to learn more about the history, people, and customs of this amazing nation while enjoying some springtime fun in the Smokies. There will be lots of food and drink, live music, dance  and entertainment.

Music is an integral part of the history of Scotland, and the festival always incorporates several distinct musical performances for attendees to enjoy throughout the weekend. The traditional Highland dance competition is always one of the featured events, and other live music typically includes bagpipers, drummers, and beautiful Celtic folk music.

Centuries ago, many Scottish people left their homeland and settled in the United States, with a particularly high concentration of settlers in the southeastern region and around the Smoky Mountains in particular. Now, you can learn more about the history of Scottish people in the Smokies and how they impacted life and culture in the region. If you have Scottish ancestry in your family, you can even research your own heritage at the festival and see how your ancestors may have come to the area.

We know what you’re thinking: how have we gone all this time without mentioning that most celebrated of Scottish beverages: Scotch whisky? Well have no fear, because the Scottish Festival and Games is never complete without Scotch tastings during the festivities. Connoisseurs of this world-renowned beverage will be on hand to introduce attendees to a few of the different regions and flavor characteristics that make up the vast realm of Scotch whisky.

Scottish Festival and Games in the Smoky MountainsThey may not be able to sample the whisky, but there’s still plenty of fun in store for the kids as well. Kid-themed entertainment opportunities such as face painting, crafts, and other games will keep them busy all weekend long. The festival also holds a kids-only version of the famous Highland Games, where the young ones can participate in scaled-down editions of such classics as the Caber Toss and the – somewhat improbable – Haggis Hurl.

The festival is more than dog-friendly – it features a dog show and parade, where some of these intelligent and hard working animals will even be decked out in their family’s tartan colors. It’s one of the most popular events during the weekend, and don’t worry, breeds other than Scotties are welcome to join!

[By the way, if pet-friendly matters to you, make sure you know about our many pet-friendly Gatlinburg cabins and our Pet friendly cabins in Pigeon Forge.]

And last but not least, the festival wouldn’t be complete without the annual Scottish Games. It is believed that many of these competitions have been a part of Scottish culture since at least the 11th century, when the king of Scotland ordered peasants to race so that he could find the fastest messenger in the land.

Thankfully, today’s competitors don’t have to bear that burden, but they still thrive on performing these feats of athleticism for a crowd! Watch as participants toss massive poles end-over-end in the Caber Toss, hurl a traditional Scottish hammer in the Hammer Throw, and much more.

The Scottish Festival and Games is held annually in Maryville, which is a beautiful drive – as guests in our Wears Valley cabins know – about 40 miles to the west of Gatlinburg. If you’ve made it to Townsend, perhaps on your way to Cades Cove, or for that fun town’s own festival, then you’re already halfway to Maryville – which in June usually has its own festival, the BBQ Bash. But in May, the Scottish Festival offers a compelling reason to go the extra miles.

For more information about the festival, including ticket information and registration for events such as Scotch whisky seminars, check out the official event website. You can also visit the Facebook page to connect with other attendees and see photos from past editions of the festival.

Dollywood Barbeque & Bluegrass Festival

You’ll have a hot time in the summertime when visiting Tennessee and that’s because the Smoky Mountains are “smokin’ hot” for two weeks starting in late May with the savory flavors of barbeque and the sizzling sounds of bluegrass at the Dollywood theme park. For two weeks, it’s all aboard for visitors on a nonstop ride to food, fun, and fabulous entertainment – Tennessee style – at the annual Dollywood Barbeque and Bluegrass Festival.

UPDATE 2024: It was great, but currently Dollywood is not running this festival.

Food Favorites

Once you enter the park, your sense of smell will come alive as the pungent aromas of sweetness and spices, grilling and smoking waft through the air. If you aren’t hungry when you arrive, it won’t take you long to become ravenous. Visual and fragrant samples of southern barbeque beckon as you pass by the many food venues.

Take your pick from Miss Lilian’s BBQ Corner, the Front Porch Cafe, Hickory House, Big Skillet, Red’s Diner, and Market Square Booths. Each one has flavorful menus featuring its own version of barbeque specialties and select sauces to please any barbeque lover’s palate, along with all the traditional fixin’s to complete the meal.

Slather your favorite sauce – whether you prefer rich and sweet or with a touch of tangy vinegar – over a slab of ribs, an order of BBQ chicken wings, a mouthwatering pulled-pork sandwich, or a helping of deep-smoked sausage. Add a side or two from traditional favorites such as creamy mustard-based potato salad, crisp and buttery grilled corn on the cob, beans baked in their own special sauce, and a choice of delicious desserts.

Fabulous Entertainment

Tennessee’s history is rooted deep in the Appalachian culture, which is home to bluegrass music. A blend of Scottish, Irish, English, and African cultures, bluegrass music is a sound like no other with banjos, fiddles, and guitars creating toe-tapping instrumentals, gospel, and songs with heartfelt lyrics.

The lineup of performers is always stellar with some of the best bluegrass musicians to be found making their way to Dollywood for the annual music fest. Dollywood is a great venue for musicians, with multiple stages. No matter where you are, you’ll hear the twang of the banjos as performers take the stage each day of the festival at one of the many locations, so you’ll never miss a beat.

Performances are scheduled at the Celebrity Theater, the Showstreet Palace Theater, Valley Theater, and the WDVX stage at the Backporch Theater. There will also be music at the Plaza at Wilderness Pass Stage, as well as bluegrass musicians roving the park to tickle your fancy with a lively tune. Enjoy as many free concerts as you like, they’re all included with admission to the theme park.

Fun, Fun and More Fun!

From the time you enter the park, there’s no end to the fun and excitement until you call it a day. While satisfying taste buds and enjoying bluegrass at its best, plan some time to explore the theme park and its many activities. Over 40 rides offer thrills and excitement for children and adults, plus there are additional shows and performances, craft demonstrations by local artisans, and special activities like the VIP tour and SkyZip where you’ll soar over the theme park on a zipline for a panoramic view.

Wilderness Wildlife Week: Early (Early!) Spring in Pigeon Forge

Every year in January or February, Pigeon Forge hosts a week of programs known as Wilderness Wildlife Week. Free and open to the public, the event offers hundreds of experts presenting workshops, seminars, children’s educational and fun activities, and guided hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s a celebration of the abundant diversity of the area, its nature, topography and wildlife.

UPDATE 2025: This year’s event is January 28 – February 21, 2025.

Wilderness Wildlife Week: Every Spring in Pigeon Forge

The popular event was always based in the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge, and currently has moved to the Ramsey Hotel and Convention Center, and usually lasts several days. It’s an excellent introduction to the Smoky Mountains, perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and everyone who loves the outdoors, especially in the beauty of the mountains and America’s most visited national park.

With literally hundreds of experts and talents in practically any field you can think of, conducting hundreds of classes, demonstrations, tours and performances through the week, it is simply impossible not to find something each day that enthralls you. This is perfect family fun, informative and entertaining at the same time. It makes a great home-schooling curriculum.

Wilderness Wildlife Week aims to demonstrate the culture, history, terrain, wildlife and foliage of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the region around it. This subject is even more vast when you browse the hundreds of events that go into this theme, from music to photography, history to hiking, fishing, writing, art, theater performance and truly a whole lot more.

LeConte Center hosts close to a hundred exhibits and booths for this event, and is usually open daily from 9 am to 6 pm (closing at 3 pm on the final day). Daily events start at 8 am and run full-tilt until around 7:30 pm, followed by a keynote evening program each day.

Each day covers more than 50 events happening, mostly in the Center and with some offsite in the Park or at other locations. Typically each event is no longer than an hour, and with many running at the same time, you simply can’t see everything you’d like to. But it’s all part of the amazing richness of the Park and the area, brought to life in this bustling event.

What’s Included

There will be a photography exhibit in the Center all week, opening Sunday, and also a photography contest with several categories. There are numerous photography classes through the week, including how to avoid common mistakes and shoot a good nature photograph, exploring editing software, how to shoot flowers, butterflies and birds, where and when to photograph the Smokies through the seasons – and even how best to enter a photography competition!

Music ranges from full performances of bluegrass, hymns and mountain ballads, to explorations of single instruments. Try the hammered dulcimer event or the claw hammer banjo. Don’t forget the bagpipes, of course. And you can even learn how to play the spoons and washtub bass.

History is not far away during Wilderness Wildlife Week, presented in tours and lectures, re-enactments and performances. Colorful characters of the region appear in story and song, while Teddy Roosevelt and one of his Rough Riders engage in an evening of stories around the campfire.

Wait, there’s more

Writing, cartooning, landscape perspective, drawing, trout fishing, storytelling, rag-rug making, harp singing, the truth about pirates, Amelia Earhart, bears, Civil War soldiers, camp cookery, gemstone jewelry, Native American skills and lore, mastering the cell phone, bird nest boxes, dowsing, wood carving – all of these things are only SOME of the treats lined up for Wilderness Wildlife Week!

Offsite there are guided hikes of different levels, bird hikes, scenic strolls, waterfalls to visit, as well as numerous indoor classes on hiking and backpacking, hiking journals, hill walking in Scotland, hiking Mt. Whitney, and of course all about the 850 miles of maintained hiking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The event’s web listing is here: Wilderness Wildlife Week.

Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show in Pigeon Forge: A Swashbuckling Extravaganza

One ticket to the attraction pays for admission to Pirates Village before the show, admission to the Pirates Voyage performance, and a full meal, served during the performance. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with family and is a special favorite with kids. The venue is adjacent to The Island and with plenty of parking.

The show itself takes place in an indoor arena with an elaborate pirate-themed set, featuring full-sized pirate ships and a pool (sea) in the center. The costumes are vivid and colorful, and the performers act, sing, dance, dive, and perform stunning acrobatics while guests are served a full meal and enjoy the show. All the seats give a good view of the action.

Come Early for the Pre-Show in Pirates Village

Arrive early and check out the Pirates Village souvenir shop or grab a drink or snack. Games are also available, and children can get their faces painted like pirates or mermaids – young kids will love getting this Pirate or Mermaid Makeover. Be prepared for performers to be in character from the moment you pull into the parking lot until the end of your visit.

The staff and performers are very attentive, warm and interactive with the audience, in a good way, which adds to the sense of immersion. Kids may even get an invitation to come down and get closer to the activities – but no one is pushy.

Experience a Mesmerizing Performance

Many people agree on the mesmerizing effect the Pirates Voyage performance has on the audience — especially children, who are often too engrossed in the show to fully keep up with their meals.

The plot centers around Captain Blackbeard and his quartermaster, Calico Jack, who lead the Crimson and Sapphire crews on their high sea adventures. Pirates, mermaids, tropical birds, seals, and other colorful characters make frequent appearances and dazzle the audience. This is a zesty show, and the energy of the performances is stunning.

Enjoy a Full Four-Course Meal

Throughout the performance, guests will enjoy a full four-course meal, served to them individually by servers assigned to each row. Meals are served piecemeal, which allows time in between to watch the countless activities happening at the same time. And you get to eat with a knife and fork!

The Me Hearties Feast includes a standard menu for all guests. However, vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available by request. Just be sure to mention your wish for a special meal when you make your reservation, which can be done online. Servers and staff are happy to answer any questions regarding food ingredients and allergies.

Things to Know Before Your Arrival

  • Pirates Voyage is suitable for children and adults of all ages, but use your best judgment. The performance may feature loud noises, bright lights, and fast-paced fighting and dancing scenes.
  • Small children (2 and younger) must have their own seat in order to receive a meal. If using a car carrier, be sure to purchase a separate seat for the carrier. Children’s admission prices apply. If traveling with a stroller, leave it in your vehicle as strollers are not permitted in the building.
  • The Pirates Voyage facilities are completely handicap accessible and accommodating for those with disabilities. Speak to a staff member if someone in your party requires special needs, such as wheelchair access or hearing assistance.
  • Flash photography and video recording are not allowed during the performance.

The Show

The show is fast-paced with real lumberjacks showing off their expertise during each of the 11 challenging competitions. Our champion lumberjacks have quick reflexes, great balance, and on-target precision. They make each competition look easy whether they’re in a speed-climbing competition or attempting to be the fastest to saw through a thick log.

Watch the lumberjacks take aim with an axe and hit the bulls-eye right on target, or as they compete against each other in maintaining their balance on the fast-moving log roll. When the award-winning lumberjacks from the Dawson and McGraw families take the stage, you’ll cheer for your team during each competition to win lumberjack “cookies” – which get shared with the kids.

Lumberjack Feud Adventures

Get involved by taking part in the same competitions as the lumberjacks by signing up for the Adventures. That’s right, adults and children can experience the competitions for themselves in the Springboard Chop, Speed Climb, Cross-Cut Saw, Log Roll, and the Boom Run competitions.

At the High Woodsmen Challenge, kids ages 7 and up are challenged by 28 lumberjack-themed obstacles. If you’ve always wanted to get a bird’s eye view, The Flying Ox can make it happen. The ride provides a dual opportunity of seeing Lumberjack Square in what’s described as a “roller coaster blended with a zipline” adventure. At Timber Towers, treat the butterflies in your stomach to their own memorable lumberjack experience when you take a leap from an 80-foot tower fitted with assorted jump elements.

Taking on the challenging obstacles of the course is fun, and safe, as participants are securely connected with harnesses and other safety equipment while maneuvering the action-filled course. In order to participate in the Adventure, kids must be at least 7 years of age, and through age 11 must have someone 16 or older accompany them. Weight restrictions are no heavier than 270 pounds, and all participants must wear closed-toe footwear.

Dining

Lumberjacks need their strength to take on challenging competitions and several dining options are available at Lumberjack Square. Choose from the menus at Calhoun’s, Smoky Mountain Brewery, and Five Guys to please your palate. For your convenience, you can dine at one of the restaurants before or after the show or get it to go and enjoy during the show, or you can bring your own food and beverages. What a great idea for a show – bring your own food in to eat while you enjoy the fun!

General Information

Whether Pigeon Forge is experiencing rain or shine, the show must go on. The climate-controlled grandstand keeps visitors comfortable and protected from the elements throughout the year. Feel free to bring your camera and take some memorable pictures of the lumberjacks in action. After the show, lumberjacks are available for pictures and autographs. Please note, video recording is not allowed.

Shows are scheduled on select days in January, February, and part of March with a start time of 5:00 p.m. Beginning on March 11 through December 31, shows are scheduled with 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m. start times depending on the day and month. Biblical Times Dinner Theater in Pigeon Forge

Biblical Times Dinner Theater presents immersive shows based on Biblical stories, engaging the audience through the accurate retelling of classic Bible tales and persons, uplifting and enlivening through world-class sound and visual effects. The theater brings Bible stories to life in fun and creative ways the whole family can appreciate at any age.

Image courtesy of Biblical Times Theater

The characters and settings combine with the effects to take us back into the Biblical time for a truly compelling story of the lives of people such as Joseph, Moses, Elijah, and Ruth. All of the facts presented are meticulously researched and verified by scholars to make sure the true story is told.

As we write, the theater is presenting the story of Peter, telling it from his point of view, portraying his hopes and fears, doubts and aspirations as he went through his torturous journey to ultimate redemption.

The shows are a mixture of live acting and hologram or projected backdrops, allowing the show to mix in Biblical icons, film clips and other imagery with the personal story being told. The holographic and special effects are compelling, the  audio-visual equipment is superb, and the seating is opulent.

The shows begin with dinner accompanied by a variety of Christian song, from Gospel through contemporary to classic hymns, and then move into the main presentation as a full immersible experience. The food is prepared by the restaurant next door to the theater, and offers gluten-free and vegetarian options. Servings are large and refreshments are unlimited.

There’s more than the show on offer at Biblical Times, with concert shows and a museum to explore. The gospel concerts bring in major groups such as The Kingsmen, The Hoppers, The Griffith Family, Avenue, The Sound, and more. The museum features displays of ancient and Christian artifacts.

The theater itself is themed Biblically, in the manner of ancient Jerusalem, with stone architecture etched with Bible verses, and staff dressed in period, to welcome you and guide you to your seats. There’s a devout atmosphere here, where praying and rejoicing is very much allowed, including by the performers who often join guests in prayer after the show.

In a largely secular world, Biblical Times Theater offers a chance to get away from disbelief and immerse freely into faith and devotion. The stories and information presented are authentic, and serve as a great way to pass this knowledge to the kids, in a fun way.

The theater offers reserved table seating, wheelchair accessibility, free parking, and souvenir photo options – and groups are welcomed.

Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum: Best in the World

UPDATE: The Museum is now permanently CLOSED. Floyd Garrett passed away in November, 2021, after a lifetime devoted to cars. He was a very friendly man, and had one of the finest auto museums in the country. It was a classy ride.

If you love the old American muscle cars it’s worth taking a run to Sevierville just down the road from Pigeon Forge to visit Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum, one of the largest and best collections in the world of American cars from the golden era of muscle cars.

For a few years spanning the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s a unique thing happened in America, when the love of styling teamed up with the pursuit of horsepower to create some of the most beautiful, outrageous and downright FAST race machines ever built.

Floyd Garrett had a dream to collect them all and in his museum he houses over 90 of the greatest legends to come out of Detroit, every one of them gleaming like new. It’s a step back in time to revisit a bygone age.

Even non-fanatics will catch their breath at the spectacular array of the cars, seeing design lines dreamed up by artists who were on a roll, beautiful automotive paint jobs, and lots of shining metal. And for gear heads, it’s pure heaven to find some of the rarest muscle cars ever collected in one place.

Floyd Garrett is usually on hand to answer people’s questions, and there seems to be nothing he doesn’t know about muscle cars. Beyond the amazing displays of cars and period setting artifacts, the museum has memorabilia and gift items in abundance. The price of admission is low and you are encouraged to bring your camera!

Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum is open 7 days a week except Thanksgiving and Christmas permanently closed.

The new venue offers greatly improved facilities. The theater offers a large auditorium and foyer, plenty of guest amenities, and lots of parking – a crucial thing in the bustling town of Pigeon Forge. Dinner is served about an hour before the show starts. And here are the shows currently playing.

America’s Hit Parade at the Grand Majestic Dinner Theater

Soul of Motown at the Grand Majestic Dinner Theater

– -A TripAdvisor “#1 Show in the Smokies” award winner.

The music was immediately catchy, with infectious, driving beats and soulful melodies that created a massive wave of giant hits across America and the world.

Now you can live that Motown music again, performed live by the amazing singers of Soul of Motown, a gripping, high energy show that will get you tapping your feet, singing along, and dancing in the aisles!

Parents will be amazed at how many songs they know the words to, and had forgotten. Kids will be captured on hearing this music they may never have heard before.

Soul of Motown creates the music of The Drifters, The Platters, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson Five, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Impressions, The O’Jays, Earth Wind and Fire, and many more. The show also features the Ladies of Soul – names such as Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and the Supremes, and Gladys Knight & The Pips.

The Soul of Motown performers are highly accomplished entertainers with tremendous stage presence and audience interaction. This show will enthrall the whole family from young to old. As you leave the theater floating on a cloud of music that won’t let go, you’ll see why so many people plan their trips to Pigeon Forge to include a return visit to Soul of Motown.

Kids immediately relate to the comedy and antics of the Hazzard County characters. The performers are extremely accomplished, and bring all the characters to life. Expect intense discussions in your family after the show about which particular character stole the show!

See again the Duke boys, Bo and Luke, Boss Hogg, Roscoe, Uncle Jesse, Flash, and special guests that turn up during the show, in a foot-tapping, rousing musical with comedy, dance and clean family fun.

The country music includes modern hits and some great impersonations and covers that allow the talented performers to excel – more of that “stealing the show” argument again!

If you liked the TV show, you will LOVE this stage performance of Hazzard County Hoe Down!

Memories Theatre: Perfect Recall of Yesterday’s Greats

When you think of your favorite hit musicians, the chances are good that Memories Theatre has at some point featured performers who provide stunning tribute renditions of their greatest numbers.

Elvis never left, he just moved to Memories Theatre in Pigeon Forge, home of the longest running show on the Parkway, now 27 years old and acclaimed as one of the best.

The theater offers plenty of riveting captures of top performers, some who are no longer with us, and others who are very much around and on top of their form. It’s all a tribute to legendary music, performed with uncanny impersonations.

Do you miss the music of Buddy Holly, Conway Twitty, the Blues Brothers? How about Roy Orbison or Johnny Cash? Want to catch a powerhouse Tina Turner performance again? Or Rod Stewart? Memories Theatre offers a regular slate of shows that feature these performers and many, many more.

In addition to the Salute to Elvis Show, Memories Theatre features tributes to famous legends past and present such as Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Tom Jones, Willie Nelson, Neil Diamond, Patsy Cline, Ray Charles and Cher.

The Elvis tribute show may be the best you’ve ever seen. Elvis is always featured in the theater lineup, but it’s important to check the schedule for the dates when your particular favorites appear. Be warned also that shows often sell out, with reserved seating often booked many months in advance.

Images courtesy of Memories TheatreIt’s a family entertainment show at Memories Theatre. With a great house band and dance group, the venue puts on an uplifting, rocking show every time. The performances will win over the kids, who may never have heard the music before. There’s nothing like watching Mom and Dad carried back to earlier times, and singing along to legendary hits. And the performers prove that acts like Jerry Lee Lewis endure through the generations.

Starting in summer of 2016, Memories brings Michael Jackson to the stage in an exciting new show!

Meet the performers after the show, and pose for a photo on a gleaming Harley Davidson motorcycle with your favorite legend. A full line of Elvis memorabilia is available to purchase. And every show is recorded to DVD, a great way to keep your memories of Memories.

Typically the theater runs shows Tuesday through Saturday, with a “Blast From the Past” matinee on Tuesday and Thursday. Call for show dates, reservations and information:

Synchronous Fireflies in the Smoky Mountains

2024 INFO: The Park Service provides updated information here. The Lottery for a parking pass to view the Synchronous Fireflies is open April 26 – April 29 and you can register for the lottery here. Lottery results will be announced on May 7. The Firefly Viewing dates are June 3 – 10.

2024 UPDATE: If you missed the lottery and your chance to see the fireflies at peak season, don’t despair.  You can try visiting the Elkmont campground June 1-2 or June 11-12, just before and after peak viewing season.  You can also get some good firefly viewing at Cades Cove throughout the summer.

Every spring you have a chance to see thousands of fireflies light up at once in the Great Smoky Mountains. This event is the only one of its kind in North America, and the rangers of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park release a limited number of tickets to view the event every year through a random lottery.

Many of us have fond memories of warm late spring evenings spent in the outdoors, often peppered with the glowing lights of fireflies around us. If you were lucky you might get to see a few dozen in one place at one time. Seeing a firefly light up in the night sky is a reminder of just how incredible our natural world is. Seeing thousands of fireflies light up at once in a synchronous pattern is a wondrous event, and an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.

Synchronous Fireflies in the Smoky Mountains

These fireflies are actually a species of beetle, and when they are trying to attract a mate their abdomen produces a chemical reaction that causes a brief glowing light to appear. There are many different species of fireflies that live in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but this particular species is the only one that has been observed with this synchronous lighting activity. Scientists are still unsure of why it happens, but we do know that it is a stunningly beautiful example of the diversity of wildlife in our region.

Each year the park rangers designate a period of peak viewing for the fireflies— typically one week in late May to early June—and each night during this period they allow people who have won parking passes in the lottery to enter the Elkmont campground in order to get an up-close view of the most amazing natural light show around. The lucky attendees are asked not to use any cell phones or other light-emitting electronic devices in the area, and also to cover flashlights with red or blue cellophane in order to minimize the disturbance of the fireflies.

The synchronous fireflies are one of the most unique natural events not just in the Smoky Mountain region, but in the entire world. If you have the opportunity to travel here for this amazing spectacle you should absolutely take your chance at the lottery, because you probably won’t get any other opportunities to see something like this in the wild.

The parking pass lottery is run each year by the National Park Service. It typically opens in late April and only lasts for a few days, so make sure you don’t miss your chance to enter. The lottery is free to enter, and winners will be charged $20.00 for the parking pass to cover administrative fees once they are selected. You can enter online once the lottery goes live at the recreation.gov event page, or over the phone by calling 1-877-444-6777. You can learn more about the lottery process on the National Park Service’s website, and also check out their FAQ about the event. For more information about synchronous firefly viewings from past years, check out some of our prior blog posts.

The fireflies are notoriously difficult to photograph, because visitors can’t shine lights, but in 2018, NBC News captured some good scenes, in part by using night-vision equipment. Check it out:

Watching for synchronous fireflies is just one of the many things to do in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains. Good luck with that lottery, and enjoy one of the most beautiful natural events in the world!

Gatlinburg: First In the Nation With Independence Day Parade

Independence Day is such a special occasion that it deserves more than one day of celebration, and for over 40 years the town of Gatlinburg has been treating residents and visitors to a Fourth of July event that kicks off at the stroke of midnight on the night of the 3rd. The First Independence Day Parade in the nation is just the beginning of a full slate of events allowing everyone to come together and honor the founding of this great country.

Gatlinburg: First In the Nation With Independence Day Parade

Gatlinburg’s 4th of July Midnight Parade

Once the clock strikes midnight and it is officially Independence Day, the festivities begin in downtown Gatlinburg. The parade floats will depart at 12:01 AM from Baskins Creek Bypass on East Parkway. From there, the parade route turns south onto Parkway and traverses downtown Gatlinburg for approximately one mile. It eventually concludes at traffic light #10 at Ski Mountain Road.

The parade has been named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as a “Top Ten parade to see in the US.” It is one of the most popular events of the year in the Smoky Mountains region, so we recommend that you stake out your spot earlier in the evening of July 3 to get a great view of the parade festivities.

Gatlinburg River Raft Regatta

After you have had a chance to rest it’s time to get ready for the annual River Raft Regatta in Gatlinburg. Don’t worry, you don’t need to learn how to sail to participate in this regatta, because it’s a race of unmanned floatable watercraft that speed down the Little Pigeon River.

The race kicks off at 12:00 PM on July 4, but participants can register their watercraft beginning at 10:00 AM. It starts at the Christ in the Smokies bridge and winds down to the finish line at Ripley’s Aquarium. Even if you aren’t able to build a floatable, you can still participate in the fun by renting a rubber duck to send down the river for just a $1.00 donation to the Gatlinburg Chamber Foundation (or you can bring your own for free).

Pigeon Forge Patriot Festival

If you’re staying in Pigeon Forge there will be plenty of Independence Day-themed fun for you to enjoy as well. Every year on July 4 the Patriot Festival takes place at Patriot Park (186 Old Mill Ave.). It features live entertainment, food vendors, and the Kid’s Karnival throughout the day, all leading into a headlining musical performance as the sun starts to set.

Fireworks Extravaganzas

No Fourth of July celebration is complete without a rousing fireworks display, and here in the Smoky Mountains we have two great ones to choose from. In Pigeon Forge, the fireworks cap off the Patriot Festival beginning at 9:45 PM and conclude the evening in spectacular fashion.

Fireworks also light up the night sky over the heart of downtown Gatlinburg at 10:00 PM on July 4. While there are excellent viewing areas throughout downtown, the best spots tend to be near traffic lights #3 and #5. You won’t have time to catch both fireworks shows, so pick which one works best for your schedule, relax with your family, and enjoy the celebration.

For more information about these fantastic events, check out the official websites for the town of Gatlinburg and the town of Pigeon Forge. You can also read some of the write-ups we’ve done in the past on the Fourth of July Midnight Parade and other Independence Day festivities in the area.

And whichever town you pick for your celebration on the Fourth, check us for your Gatlinburg cabin or your Pigeon Forge cabin rentals (and we even have Wears Valley cabins).

Tunes and Tales: Music and Performance on the Streets of Gatlinburg

One of the most engaging attractions of summer in Gatlinburg is the annual street-performing Tunes & Tales event, which runs for almost two months and features musicians and performers at large on the streets of Gatlinburg, entertaining downtown Parkway strollers with bluegrass music for free every evening.

Tunes & Tales usually starts in late June and runs to around mid-August. We often write about the event in our blog – see some of our other articles here and here. And you can find an update each year at the bottom of this article.

Tunes and Tales: Music and Performance on the Streets of Gatlinburg

Gatlinburg has always been a strolling town, as well as filled with musical talent and a rich, Appalachian heritage. Tunes and Tales takes all this to the street each evening during its summer season, to the great delight of visitors. This immensely popular event started in 2006, and has gained strength ever since.

Bluegrass musicians, cloggers, artisans, character actors and storytellers are the features of Tunes and Tales, with period and traditional costume much in evidence. Zeno the Bear, Gatlinburg’s signature costumed character can often be discovered during these summer evenings. He’s always ready to try some street dancing and to give out furry hugs to kids for selfies.

The season draws on the area’s formidable array of musical and performance talent, as well as attracting artists from across the country. While it may seem impromptu, auditions for each season usually begin half a year in advance, and the performing troupes plan out their surprises diligently.

Sometimes the performers will descend on Parkway by horse-drawn wagon, and sometimes they’ll quietly steal in from out of nowhere. They like to surprise people, but you can find information on who’d appearing and sometimes even where and when on their Facebook page.

Here’s a scene from a few years back when that year’s performers organized a bluegrass flash mob to surprise visitors:

Winter Tunes and Tales

Tunes and Tales has a winter season also, on weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, when carolers enliven Parkway with live music, conversation and storytelling. Period costume abounds, and selfies flash amid all the colorful lights and decorations of Gatlinburg in the season.

Summer or winter, there’s always something happening and countless Things To Do in Gatlinburg!

Gatlinburg Ziplines – The Ultimate Guide to Smokies Ziplines

Gatlinburg ziplines feature some of the longest and best courses you’ll find anywhere. Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offer exhilarating ziplining experiences that will leave your heart pounding and your spirit soaring. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a nature enthusiast, ziplining across the lush landscapes of this region is an adventure like no other.

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous and looking for some unique fun, ziplining might be just the activity you and your family or friends could enjoy.

zipline
zipline

Imagine a thick steel cable strongly anchored from higher elevation and running down above the trees to a finishing place lower down the mountain. Now imagine you, securely strapped into a slider, gliding down that cable, high in the air, over hills, across dips and valleys, through some of the best scenery in the Smoky Mountains. Whoosh!

First, let’s discuss some of the nitty gritty:

How Should You Dress?

You’ll definitely be in the outdoors, so wear appropriate clothing, on the durable side. Shorts are okay and you’ll be most comfortable if they’re about mid-thigh length.

Ziplining requires a certain level of preparation in terms of attire to ensure comfort and safety.

  1. Footwear: Closed-toe shoes, like sneakers or hiking boots, are mandatory. Sandals or flip-flops are not allowed.
  2. Clothing: Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes are crucial. Avoid loose garments that could get tangled in the equipment.
  3. Accessories: Remove jewelry, scarves, and anything that could snag. Tie back long hair.
  4. Weather Gear: Bring a light rain jacket if rain is forecasted, as ziplining often continues in light rain.

Mountain temperatures can vary with elevation so wear layers of clothing – ask staff advice when you get there. Do not wear any shoes with open toes – anything else, such as a basic sneaker or hiking boot, is fine.

Can Kids Go Ziplining?

Yes, but check with each course beforehand. Many zipline courses are family-friendly, offering modified adventures suitable for children.

However, each outfitter has its own age, weight, and height restrictions. Some cater to children as young as 3 to go ziplining, while others have a minimum age of 18 with more intense courses.

  1. Weight Limits: Typically range from 45 lbs to 275 lbs.
  2. Age Limits: Most places require children to be at least 7-10 years old.

How much Does it Cost?

Ziplining adventures vary in price based on the course length, number of ziplines, and included activities. On average, expect to pay:

  • Adults: $50 – $100+
  • Children: $30 – $70+

Again it depends on the course you go to – tickets can be purchased at some courses for as little as $60. Group rates are worth checking into if you can muster around ten people – this is great way for everyone to bolster any nervousness they may have too.

Safety

Ziplining has a good reputation for safety, provided the lines are well installed, and the staff are well trained. Zip lines are no place for horseplay, showing off, or ignoring procedures.

The Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) sets safety standards for ziplining. You want your zipline provider to have ACCT-certified staff. The company should be conducting self-inspections daily, with a third-party inspection annually. Good zipline companies expect you to have questions about safety and welcome the chance to give you all the answers you need – so ask!

Ober Mountain and the Aerial Tramway

Ober Mountain is Gatlinburg’s own ski resort, and one of Tennessee’s top attractions. A year-round playground of mountain fun and amazing scenic views, Ober Mountain offers an adventure even getting there, on one of America’s largest Aerial Tramways.

Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway

The cable car departs regularly every 20 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg going directly to the ski resort. The tram station is located at Parkway & LeConte Street.

The 2.1 mile journey provides an exciting alternative to the mountain drive up to the ski area – which in winter can be a task. And did we mention some of the best views of Gatlinburg below and the surrounding Smoky Mountains?

View from the tramway

The tramway has been in operation since 1973, with 2 large-capacity, counter-balanced trams. The cars were replaced in 2007 with brand new trams designed and built from advanced alloys in Switzerland.

Even at the top of the Smokies, Ober Mountain can take you higher. From the resort, take the year-round scenic chair lift for a further trip up the mountain to the top of the ski slope. In fall, you’re liable to see a view like this one.

Some images courtesy of Ober Gatlinburg

Some images courtesy of Ober Mountain

You can’t ski back down the slope in summer, but there’s another fun way down, included in the ticket. Take the Alpine Slide through the trees and ski trails, a fun and easy ride with dips and curves on your dry-land, roller-driven sled down the track.

If that whets your appetite for more motion, try Ober Mountain’s newest adventure, the Ski Mountain Coaster. With speeds you adjust yourself, it’s another great run through the mountain terrain, for thrills and great views in the mountain air.

While you’re at Ober Mountain, check out the numerous activities that make this an amusement park in the mountains, perfect for the whole family. From games and rides to animals and mini-golf, there’s also a large indoor ice rink in the climate-controlled Mall, open all year. Try a ride up to Ober Mountain on a hot summer day and put on your sweater for some ice skating!

Shoppers are catered to as well at Ober Mountain, from the Shops at Ober at the base of the tramway in downtown Gatlinburg, to the Mall shops on the mountain. You’ll be hungry with all this activity, and there’s a food court in the Mall, as well as Gatlinburg’s highest restaurant and lounge for a serious lunch or dinner – also the site of the resort’s Oktoberfest, celebrated every year.

Snow is what a ski resort lives for of course, and Ober Mountain has it. The ski area has 10 trails and 4 lifts, as well as a fun snow-tubing run at the base that is usually open from Thanksgiving until Easter! Ober Mountain uses some of the highest tech snow making equipment in existence to amplify the natural snowfall of the Smoky Mountains.

See our many articles about Ober Mountain, and for more information call the resort at (865) 436-5423 or check the Ober Mountain website.

Ober Mountain is within minutes of most of our Gatlinburg cabin rentals, Pigeon Forge cabins, and Wears Valley cabins.

Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival in Gatlinburg

UPDATE: The 2019 Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival was postponed, after the festival’s founder, Cyndy Montgomery Reeves passed away on August 8th following a struggle with illness. Then the pandemic hit in 2020, and this particular festival was never revived.

Every year in late August, the Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival takes center stage in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The goal of the festival is to bring songwriters, music professionals, and music enthusiasts together to “Celebrate Our Appalachian Musical Roots.”

Throughout the festival, there are numerous free concerts at various downtown venues as well as songwriting workshops, auditions, mentoring programs, song competitions, several ticketed shows, and more.

About the Songwriters Festival

While it’s musical performers who generally get all the fame, it’s the songwriters who compose the music and write the lyrics for your favorite country music and blue grass songs.

In this way, The Smoky Mountain Songwriters Festival is unique among music festivals in the area. Certainly, many of the participants are outstanding musicians in their own right, but at the heart of the festival is songwriting. We’re talking about that often-elusive creative process of writing notes and lyrics to make you laugh, cry, swoon, and reminisce (sometimes, all at once).

For this reason, in addition to musical performances, you’ll find a myriad of educational and workshop events and activities at the festival – all designed to explore the art of songwriting.

Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival in Gatlinburg

The full list of festival events changes each year, but often includes:

  • Songwriting Workshops
  • Co-Writing Sessions With Hit Writers
  • Songwriting Competitions (featuring hundreds of original songs!)
  • Mentoring Programs
  • Classes & Critiquing Sessions
  • Talks & Discussions
  • Band Playoffs
  • Free Performances
  • Headlining Ticketed Concerts

To learn more about the festival in general and to see this year’s line-up, head here to the official website.

History of the Songwriters Festival

In 2011, Cyndy Montgomery Reeves, founder and director of The Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival, happened upon the Key West Songwriter’s Festival in Florida. Shocked that Key West had a festival celebrating songwriters, but not Gatlinburg, home to so many songwriters, musicians, singers, and pickers, Cyndy went right to work remedying the situation.

When she returned to Gatlinburg, she met immediately with the city’s Special Events Director, George Hawkins, to suggest the idea of such a festival in Gatlinburg. To her delight, George agreed to take on the project.

The first SMSWF took place the following year in 2012, and it’s been a hit every year since!

You Don’t Have to Be a Songwriter to Enjoy the Songwriters Festival

There are thousands of music festivals throughout the nation that celebrate music in all its forms. But there are only a few festivals that celebrate the core of any and every song you’ve ever listened to — the songwriters!

Moreover, remember that there’s only one festival that celebrates songwriters in the Smoky Mountains the place where bluegrass, old time music, and country music were born.

Be sure to check our Festivals and our Things to Do in Gatlinburg pages for more activities throughout the year.

Whitewater Rafting in Gatlinburg: Thrilling or Just Chilling on the River

The Smokies feature some great whitewater rafting! Read our guide to rafting on the Pigeon River near Gatlinburg. Find outfitters, rates and things you need to know for your rafting trip.

For whitewater rafting near Gatlinburg, the Pigeon River is the place to go. The area around Hartford, TN, 45 minutes from Gatlinburg, has a number of excellent whitewater outfitters running 1 1/2 to 2 hour tours down the river (See below for a list of top outfitters). Depending on your taste, your trip can be an thrilling whitewater experience, or just a nice day on the water with the kids.

The Pigeon River is a dam-controlled river running parallel to I-40, northeast of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Since the water flows from the bottom of a lake, that means it’s cool even on the hottest summer days.

You have a choice of trips on either the Upper or Lower Pigeon River. The Upper Pigeon River is a true whitewater rafting experience and real rollercoaster ride with Class 3-4 rapids (If you’re not quite sure what Class 4 rapids looks like, click here and scroll down to see photos).

It’s great fun, but not suitable for children younger than 8 years of age. And you will definitely get wet, no matter which part of the raft you sit in. Trips run from 5 to 6 1/2 miles, depending on the outfitter you choose.

For families with small children or people seeking a nice day on the river without the adrenaline rush, the Lower Pigeon River is the better choice for rafting. Trips here run about 5 to 5 1/2 miles and feature some gentle Class 1-2 rapids. The trip is scenic, and there are plenty of opportunities to go swimming.

Regardless of which trip you take, no whitewater rafting experience is necessary. You’ll be traveling down river with an experienced guide steering your raft.

Whitewater rafting in the Smoky Mountains is mostly a summertime activity. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the dam releases water on the Pigeon River every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, which means you should have a good ride with plenty of whitewater. During the rest of the year, water release is unscheduled, so call ahead and confirm that it’s a good day for a trip or check the water gauge here.

Trips take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Plus you’ll want to budget time to drive to your rafting outfitter.

Top Whitewater Rafting Outfitters

Here are four of the best-known outfitters running whitewater tours in the area.

BE SURE you know where the trip starts. Some outfitters, like the Nantahala Outdoor Center, have ticket offices in Gatlinburg. But your trip actually starts in Hartford, TN, 45 minutes outside of town.

Check your outfitter’s web site for directions. Don’t trust your GPS to find the right spot!

Mountain Biking in Gatlinburg – The Best Places in the Smokies

Mountain biking in Gatlinburg is a real thrill. With so much scenery and so many roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the area around Gatlinburg, it’s not surprising that you can find some nice biking adventures too, IF you know where to look. The trails of the park are prohibited to cyclists, but the roads are wide open. Traffic is the problem, of course, so you want some of the less traveled roads, greenways and destinations for the best results. Here they are, along with rental and tune-up shops in the area.

Shifting Gears
112 W. Main Street, Sevierville, TN 37862
TEL:
865-908-1999

Shifting Gears is a full-service bike shop located in Sevierville, just north of Pigeon Forge. They offer rentals – from road bikes to mountain bikes – and equipment, as well as repair services in case your bike needs a tune-up before you hit the road.

Cades Cove Campground Store
10035 Campground Drive, Townsend, TN 37882
TEL: 865-448-9034

The campground store at Cades Cove inside the national park offers bike rentals for adults and children seasonally during the summer and fall. This is a great spot to rent a bike and hit the road, because while bikes are permitted on all roads (not trails) inside the park, many of them are not well suited for cycling because of vehicle traffic and narrow lanes. However, the Cades Cove loop is an exception. This 11-mile, one-way road provides bicyclists with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and touring 19th century home sites. Beginning the second week in May, the loop road is closed to motor vehicle traffic Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 10:00 a.m. to allow bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy the cove. This closure continues through the second-to-last Saturday in September.

Biking Trails in the Smokies

While most of the highly trafficked roads in the Gatlinburg area are not very safe for cyclists, the roads and outdoor adventures that are less traveled may also offer some of the best  bicycling – they frequently offer some of the best scenery. Check out our guide to Easy Outdoor Adventures for some more ideas, and read on here for biking adventures.

Pigeon Forge Greenway

The Riverwalk Greenway in Pigeon Forge runs along the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River in the heart of Pigeon Forge, connecting the Community Center with Patriot Park, and also passing by The Island. This is a great option if you want to combine a day of cycling with visiting some of the great attractions in town.

Gatlinburg Trail

The Gatlinburg Trail inside the park is flat and easy, 1.9-miles long and connecting Gatlinburg with Sugarlands Visitor Center, with beautiful river scenery and forests. It’s one of the few park trails that allows bicycles and pets. It’s a 3.8-mile trip there and back, or you could have someone pick you up at either end.

Greenbrier Road

The Greenbrier area is a quiet valley that enters the national park from Hwy 321, 6 miles east of Gatlinburg. The road itself is one mile of paved and then 5 miles of gravel – it’s a driving road but bicycling is allowed and traffic is light. The road passes a ranger station and a picnic area, and ends at two trailheads well worth exploring. This area is filled with history and gorgeous scenery – and although less visited, it’s also one one of the best places for spring wildflowers.

Tremont Road

Entering the national park from Townsend, take the Cades Cove road and fairly soon turn off towards the Institute at Tremont. This two-mile paved road is the Lower Tremont Road, less traveled than most and hugely scenic, with river and forest galore. The road turns to gravel and becomes the Upper Tremont Road for 3 more miles. This is a hidden gem about which we’ll say no more, except that it richly rewards the explorer.

Foothills Parkway

Foothills Parkway is open to bicycles and generally sees less vehicle  traffic than the roads in the national park. The 17-mile ride features spectacular mountain views and it’s a fairly easy ride – but it’s only two lanes with no bikes lanes or wide shoulders, and motorists will be intent on navigating the mountain curves and gazing at the views. Be wary on this one, and definitely only in daylight.

Tsali Recreation Area

Tsali Recreation Area in western North Carolina contains approximately 40 miles of connected trails and is one of the most renowned cycling trail systems in the country.

Other Public Recreation Areas

Mountain biking trails are open on national forest and recreation lands outside Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For information on mountain biking in these areas, please contact the following offices:

  • Chattahoochee National Forest: 770-297-3000
  • Cherokee National Forest: 423-476-9700
  • Nantahala National Forest: 828-257-4200
  • Pisgah National Forest: 828-257-4200
  • Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area: 423-286-7275
  • Mount Rogers National Recreation Area: 800-628-7207

Additional Cycling Information

Please be aware that there are no mountain biking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Gatlinburg Trail, the Oconaluftee River Trail, and the lower Deep Creek Trail are the only park trails on which bicycles are allowed. Bicycles are prohibited on all other park trails.

Don’t forget to ride safely, and follow all traffic regulations when you are on a shared road. Cycling with a helmet is always recommended, and the state of TN requires that children age 16 and under wear a bike helmet.

Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup

UPDATE: 2022 was the last year of this event, after 39 years. See our story: The Last Roundup.

Every fall on the first weekend after Labor Day, thousands of visitors flood Pigeon Forge for the annual Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup at Dollywood’s Splash Country. Some of the greatest cars ever built in America are on  display, as well as some of the wildest custom modifications.

Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup

This is one of the great shows, with hundreds of classics, customs, and rods. The venue is huge, and enthusiasts and owners come to admire muscle and paint, as well as to compete for high-value prizes, and explore the sprawling swap meet, which also takes place throughout the event.

Shades of the Past usually features over 200 entrant of all kinds, all built no later than 1972. While you can come to simply admire the cars on display, the event also features a swap meet with all manner of parts and accessories for car buffs. Swap and barter for items, shop for hard-to-find parts, and check out event t-shirts and other memorabilia that will also be on sale.

Shades of the Past is a notably family-friendly event, with no alcohol allowed but plenty of food and drink options for all palates. There are indoor restrooms, and for those with mobility challenges, there are scooters for rent to get around the large venue.

Near the end of the show, judging and an awards show will take place with numerous prizes in multiple categories, including: the Mighty Muscle picks, the Street Rodder Top 100, the Shades Top 25, the Top 5 (selected from the Top 25 eliminations during the day), Best Street Rod and Best of Show.

The two top prizes are handsome, with the second-place prize of $10,000 in cash! And the first-place prize is a 1932 Ford Hi-Boy Roadster custom built by Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, a famous native Tennessee operation.

Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup

Dollywood’s Splash Country water park closes for the season on Labor Day, which allows ample room in the parking lots for showcasing the cars and for visitor parking.

Visitors can either park for a fee at Splash Country, or use the 15 acres of free parking on Veterans Boulevard. If you choose the latter, free buses will take you between your parked car and the event. Or if you prefer, you can park for free in Pigeon Forge on Teaster Lane and take a trolley to the event for a nominal fare.

The show is typically open from 8 am – 5 pm, Friday and Saturday. Spectator admission is daily, and children under 12 are free.

You don’t have to be a hot rod or classic car enthusiast to enjoy the amazing variety of colorful rolling stock on show at the Hot Rod Roundup – the paint jobs alone are worth the viewing, in this uniquely American event.

Check the Shades of the Past Hot Rod Roundup website for more information.

Tubing in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge: Spend a Lazy Day Floating the River

A classic Smoky Mountain experience, river tubing is fun for all family members. It’s an affordable, relaxing way to enjoy nature and a great way to stay cool in the summer.

River tubing is one of our favorite ways to escape the summer heat. It’s an excellent alternative to canoeing or kayaking. It’s affordable, requires no experience, everyone gets their own tube, and it keeps everyone cool and happy. Plus, tubing is perfect for kids who might be too young for rafting.

Tubing in the Smokies (Image courtesy of River Rat)

There are two great spots for tubing on the Tennessee side of the Smokies: the Little River near Townsend and the Little Pigeon River near Sevierville. Despite the similar names, these rivers are different. To add to the confusion, the Little Pigeon River isn’t the same as the Pigeon River, which we covered in our post on whitewater rafting Confusing, right? We get it.

Both the Little River and Little Pigeon River offer clear water and beautiful scenery.

Smoky Mountain River Rat provides tubing on the Little River about 30 minutes from Gatlinburg. They offer two trips: the upper section, Outpost B, which is more adventurous and features great swimming holes; and Outpost A, their main location, which is family-friendly with small, refreshing rapids, scenic mountain views, swimming spots, and even a private rock jump! This section is suitable for ages 3+ and is dog-friendly. Both sections offer stunning scenery and plenty of swimming opportunities.

River Romp offers tubing on the Little Pigeon River, about 5 minutes from Pigeon Forge and 20 minutes from Gatlinburg. They offer a 2.5-mile trip starting from their office.

Whichever river or outfitter you choose, a shuttle bus will be provided. Depending on the float trip, they will either drive you to the starting point, from which you float back to their office, or you will start at their office and float to a pick-up point.

Both of these outfitters operate daily during the summer. It’s a good idea to call ahead to ensure they’re open during the spring and fall.

Smoky Mountain Outdoor Center is based on the Little River in Townsend. They also rent bicycles, and Townsend has great bike trails if you want to air-dry after tubing!

It’s also wise to contact these outfitters to check the river’s water flow. While we’re not experiencing a drought in the Smokies, these rivers are stream-fed and their flow can vary.

Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge: Spring and Fall Classic Cars

UPDATE 2025: This year’s Spring Rod Run happens Thurs-Sat, April 10-12. (The Fall Rod Run is September 11-13.)

Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge: Spring and Fall Classic CarsIn spring and fall each year, Pigeon Forge fills up with visitors, classic cars and hot rods to enjoy the Rod Run, a gathering of car enthusiasts and owners competing for cash prizes worth thousands of dollars, showing off paint jobs and joining in the great American pastime of Cruising the Strip.

The strip is Parkway, and traffic gets dense, but there’s a lot to look at. Hugely popular and much anticipated, every Rod Run fills the town with hundreds of classic cars and thousands of visitors. Car enthusiasts and spectators set up lawn chairs along this strip to watch the rods, customs, and classics cruise by from early day far into the night throughout the event.

Headquarters for the Spring and Fall Rod Runs is LeConte Center, on Teaster Lane close to The Island. This venue hosts a huge swap meet, and hundreds of classic cars on display. Vendors will offer plenty of memorabilia.

The Rod Runs are a 2-3 day event that have been running since 1983. Traffic gets jammed, cars cruise Parkway in the day and late into the night – you’d better want to be part of it, and many people do. It’s always a friendly crowd. There’s live music and food everywhere.

Parkway during the Rod Run comes ablaze with light and action at night, with cars and trucks of all kinds and ages cruising up and down, even at 2 in the morning, with something for every taste in automotive spectacle. Visitors come to mingle in the friendly crowds, and to watch the gleaming chrome and paint jobs slowly driving by.There’s lot of muscle on display too, with plenty of supercharged motors loping at low revs, and straining for the highway.

Rod Runs in Pigeon Forge: Spring and Fall Classic Cars

The Rod Runs have a long tradition dating back to the last century in 1983. Originally called the Grand Rod Run, after the Grand Hotel, the nostalgic heart of the event is still Traffic Light #6, although moving the headquarters to the LeConte Center has undeniably offered much more space for a larger event, as well as more parking.

For more information check the Rod Run website.

Here’s a great video showing just how many cars appear and how spread out the event is along Parkway:

Note: after the Rod Run if you’re driving out of Pigeon Forge through Sevierville make plans to visit Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum, one of the world’s finest collections of American muscle cars.

It may sound a little wild when you think of being up to 450 feet above the ground, and moving as fast as 50 mph, but you don’t watch a dashboard when you’re ziplining, you’re simply immersed in the experience, with so much to see.

As well as the mountain vistas, you can see a lot of wildlife from a zip line. Now you know what a bird’s-eye view is like – in fact, you’ll pass over and through a lot of bird habitat, and you can catch a glimpse of how the birds live, when gravity’s not a problem.

Legacy Mountain Ziplines Legacy Mountain Ziplines

The scenic sights available on the zip line rival the mountain views you would otherwise have to go hiking to find. And in the heat of summer, the welcome coolness of higher elevations is the same, except without the hike. Legacy Mountain takes you by van up to the first tower of the Canopy Tour, where the adventure begins.

Ziplining has proven itself very safe all over the world, and Legacy Mountain goes even further with double steel lines at all times. Zipliners can ride the wire in tandem also, a great arrangement for a parent and young child, or a guide with a nervous first-timer, or simply those who like each other’s company!

Such a unique and unforgettable experience as ziplining makes a great way for all the family to spend time together and share a thrilling time – for confirmation, just look around and see everyone’s wide grins! It’s impossible not to be enthusiastic in a zipline tour, and it’s a great bonding experience for families, friends and groups. Legacy Mountain offers special rates for groups of 10 or more.

Ziplining is a year-round sport, weather permitting of course, and each season has its own charm. Soar in the silence above the snows of winter, check out the wildflowers of spring, revel in the warmth and greenery of summer, or blow your mind with the famous fall colors from your amazing vantage point.

Zipliners should be moderately healthy and without heart or back conditions (and not pregnant). Casual clothes and shorts are fine but no open-toed shoes. Children as young as 3 years are allowed at Legacy Mountain, but any rider under 100 pounds must ride in tandem, and no single rider can be over 275 pounds – the weight limits aren’t for safety but simply to ensure adequate glide and momentum between the towers.

Legacy Mountain Ziplines is located just up the road from Pigeon Forge in Sevierville. The full Zipline Canopy Tour runs 3 times a day with extended hours in spring and summer.

Ziplining is by reservation – as far in advance as you can please, for this very popular attraction – so before you go, make sure to check the website (see below) for the requirements and reservations.
