Old Mill Restaurant

The oldest restaurant in Pigeon Forge serves family style food that will satisfy any hunger – large portions of country food are the standard here (and you can split an entrée).

Breakfast, until 11 am, offers farm eggs backed up with stone-ground corn grits, biscuits, muffins, breads and pancakes, all ground at the Mill. There are lots of meat choices, including pork loin, country fried steak, bacon, ham and sausage.

Lunch (11am-4pm) includes many Southern dishes such as pot roast, barbeque, chicken & dumplings, spiced liver & onions, as well as a gourmet meatloaf, ground round, and country fried steak. Several chicken meals (including pot pie) contend with roast turkey and boneless pork chops for your attention.

Shrimp, trout and catfish also feature, with burgers and many different sandwiches, along with tasty vegetables, quiche and salads, soups, corn chowder and selected desserts (but see our guide to the Old Mill District to know about The Creamery before you settle on dessert).

Dinner, from 4 pm to close, features many southern and country fried, high quality meats, shrimp, catfish and trout, as well as fine grilled meats, vegetables, salads and quiche, and fruits. All foods are fresh, and hand-cut or ground. Plus, real mashed potatoes!

The restaurant offers a children’s menu, and takeout is available. The Old Mill Restaurant doesn’t take reservations, and there’s no virtual wait-list, so you may get lucky or you may have to wait some time to get in. Staff move tables very efficiently.

This place is hugely popular, for good reason, and the wait is actually not a hardship because there are so many other things immediately around just a few steps away, from going to inspect the water wheel, to checking out one of the shops, to feeding the ducks on the river, or taking the selfies that the Old Mill is famous for. And once you’re seated at an upstairs table, the view of the river is charming.

There is no beer or wine at this venue (see below for that) but it sits across from a distillery so maybe that’s a consolation!

Old Mill Pottery House Café & Grille

Just across the road is the Pottery House Cafe, with substantial but less gigantic servings, and flavors slightly sharper. This is a lunch and dinner venue, with weekend brunch. In nice weather the outside garden patio area is a lovely place to eat, and the indoor great stone fireplace can warm up any cold weather.

As with the Restaurant above, many items here come from the grist mill, including the grains that go into the artisanal breads available here. The breading on the fried entrees also comes from the Old Mill’s own ground flour. Breads are baked on-site daily, and include mouth-watering tastes such as sourdough, onion-rye, green olive and raisin pecan – and more.

Both places use plates, bowls and bakeware made by the Old Mill Pigeon River Pottery, even to the ceramic sinks in the bathrooms. And both share the same policy of fresh ingredients prepared daily, and quality meats, with local sourcing wherever possible.

The full menu is served all day, but lunch here especially highlights salmon, shrimp and catfish along with steak and roast beef, pork chop and chicken and turkey in various styles including great sandwiches and soups.

The menu is extensive and includes an Alfredo and Florentine as well as stir-fry, and tasty sauces and seasonings on quality meats. The Cafe has several hearty soups, and lots of enticing, flavorful salads, as well as various quiches. A large variety of side dishes can accompany most any meal you’re in the mood for, and appetizers include salmon cakes, dips and spring rolls.

From choice Black Angus hand-cut steaks and hand-ground burgers to a range of sandwiches, soups, salads and dozens more specialties, anyone can get happy eating here. This includes the children, with a Kid’s Menu that adds a corn dog, mac & cheese and grilled cheese to the mix, as well as burgers of course, for the complete American cuisine!

Homemade desserts include many pie and cake concoctions – but visitors may also want to know about the Old Mill Creamery for some of the best ice cream in town, including flavors from the Old Mill Candy Kitchen and the Old Forge Distillery. See our guide to the Old Mill District for details).

The Weekend Brunch finally breaks out the eggs, with Benedicts, Steak, omelet, sausage, cheeses, with a knowledgeable use of pecans, pralines and raisins. Breads, biscuits and waffles are all home made of course, and Mimosas and Bellinis can quench the thirst.

The Cafe serves a selection of wines and beer including some local craft beers.Chef specials are always worth asking about. This place is hugely popular also, and takes no reservations. There is a virtual wait list online to help with any wait, and as with the Restaurant, the area is endlessly fascinating to explore during any wait time. Takeout is available here also.

Delauder’s BBQ: Award-Winning Hidden Gem in Gatlinburg

UPDATE: Note the new location – see below

Delauder’s Smoky Mountain BBQ in Gatlinburg is hard to find but worth it – a hidden gem serving barbecue that was named among the Top 25 in the nation. If you crave an authentic taste of Tennessee barbecue, you have to give this place a try.

Eastern Tennessee barbecue is an American treasure, known throughout the nation for its distinctive flavor and tender texture. Local cooks specialize in pulled pork, but have applied their talents to everything from ribs to chicken, to brisket, and even to vegetables. If you’re looking for a truly American culinary experience, you can find one of the best right here in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Delauder’s: Highly Awarded Barbecue

Delauder’s Smoky Mountain BBQ puts Tennessee’s proud culinary tradition on display for all to enjoy. Located off the beaten path in Gatlinburg, Delauder’s has consistently impressed visitors from all over the United States. The restaurant in June of 2018 received recognition for its delicious flavors and distinctive regional style in Travel & Leisure Magazine’s list of America’s Top 25 Best Places for Barbecue. The year before it was awarded in Yelp’s list of the Top 100 Best Places to Eat in America.

Fresh Food & Signature Styles

The first thing you’ll notice about Delauder’s is the sheer variety of barbecue styles they serve. From pulled pork to rack ribs to brisket to chicken chunks, the restaurant offers every variety of meat, putting its unique, smoky spin on each. Delauder’s also serves veggie and fruit trays, salads, and both traditional and jalapeño-based sauces. Combined with baked beans, fried green beans, barbecue nachos, cobblers, and a host of other sides and desserts, you can have your pick of unique local foods.

As the restaurant’s founder and owner, Denny Delauder has one main goal: to “feed people like you are family.” To that end, he makes all his barbecue fresh each morning, so you can experience it at its best. This is why the restaurant only opens in the afternoon, and closes each day as soon as the barbecue has sold out. Denny and his team need the mornings to slowly roast this delicious meat, and refuse to serve any that wasn’t cooked that day. He wouldn’t serve leftover meat to his family; why should you be treated any differently?

Rave Reviews Across the Country

Delauder’s has consistently earned glowing reviews not only from locals, but also from visitors hailing from all over the country. Customers praise its meats on every front, describing its “melt in your mouth” texture and calling its flavor “like eating a juicy campfire.” The sides are also a big hit, with past patrons being particularly fond of Delauder’s fried green beans and its unique take on nachos.

This isn’t just coming from people who never had barbecue before, or who’ve only had the specific style of Eastern Tennessee. Past customers include people from North Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, and Missouri— states with their own renowned barbecue styles. Yet all these customers say that Delauder’s served them some of the best barbecue they’ve ever had.

Delauder’s used to be hard to find, hidden behind shops along the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community Trail – which was a great stop for refueling in a day’s worth of shopping. But note that it moved, and is located about 4 miles out on East Parkway (Hwy 321) that splits off from Parkway at Traffic Light #3 in Gatlinburg. The operation has taken over a former gas station, so there’s plenty of parking off the highway. The new address is 1875 East Pkwy, Gatlinburg, TN 37738.

Delauder’s is small, family run, and its hours of operation vary by day, but generally last from lunchtime until around 7 pm. Make sure to get there early or call ahead, because if they run out of meat they’ve cooked that day, they won’t serve anything that’s old!

Gaucho Urbano: A Brazilian Steakhouse with Modern Flair

Gaucho Urbano, located just off of Parkway in Pigeon Forge, is an iconic Brazilian steakhouse offering a unique dining experience. It’s popular, so book your table well ahead of time (walk-ins are welcome but it’s chancy). Service here is a churrasco-style dining experience, essentially grilled meats of many kinds, typically on a skewer, and brought to your table. The restaurant is family-owned, the atmosphere is upbeat and upscale and the service is quality.

The grilled meats are the star of the show, and for good reason. They’re all well seasoned, exceptionally tender, and perfectly cooked every time. These skewered meats are cut at your table, and you can enjoy up to 16 different cuts of meat, ranging from filet mignon and lamb chops to chicken legs, smoked sausage and even teriyaki chicken.

The kitchen also serves up traditional Brazilian dishes and sides, with its own touches added for a nicely unique experience. Ingredients are fresh and authentic. Complementing the meats are a range of salads, sides and various substitutes such as salmon.

Seasonally varying, the Harvest Table offers salads made fresh daily, including Brazilian potato salad, salmon salad, and green salad. Quality cheeses and the kitchen’s heart of palm creations.ass to the options.

The Chef’s Hot Table gives you a chance to pile on the rice, beans, and other scratch-made sides and Brazilian provincial dishes. Soup, stew, and other seasonal items round out the offerings, pairing with the grilled meats however you wish.

How it Works

Table service is continuous, and at your whim. You get a token to flip as needed to bring a passador to your table. To begin, the server will get you settled in at your table, take your drink orders, and direct you to the gourmet salad bar and chef’s hot table. Once you return to your seat, flip your token to green to let the passadores know you’re ready for the meats brought to the table.

Turn your token to the red side after filling your plate to give yourself time to savor all the flavors before you. Then, repeat this procedure as long as you want until you’re fully satisfied. It’s an all-you-can-eat restaurant for a set price (not counting drinks and desserts), so there’s no limit to how many times you can fill up your plate. Just remember to save room for dessert or risk missing out on sweet treats to remember.

Guests can choose their menu offerings. The full Gaucho Experience offers the 16 meats as well as full access to the Harvest Table for salads and fresh and steamed vegetables, as well as cheeses and other delicacies. Also included is access to the Chef’s Hot Table for Brazilian dishes, sides and soups, with seasonal items.

You can choose a limited version of the Gaucho, with 9 meats selected daily by the Chef and the same full access to the Harvest and Hot Tables. You can trim the selection down even further with select chicken dishes and the Harvest Table offerings. And finally, you can bypass all the meats and dine superbly well from a Harvest and Hot Tables combo.

With a full bar at your fingertips, you can elevate your meal by ordering up all your favorite drinks. Handcrafted cocktails are the name of the game, but Gaucho Urbano has a full national and international wine list, and of course non-alcoholic beverages also.

Any of the restaurant’s eight handmade desserts serve as the perfect way to end your meal. You can choose from their papaya cream, Brazilian flan, and such – or just go with a specialty coffee to finish things off with a kick.

Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair – One of the South’s Largest Artisan Fairs

2024 INFO:The Fall Craft Fair is October 3-20. Daily 10 am – 5 pm. Admission $10 for Adults, Children FREE with Adult. Gatlinburg Convention Center, 234 Historic Nature Trail, Gatlinburg TN 37738 (at traffic light #8).

The Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair has been running continuously since 1975. It opens twice a year, running for 10 days in July and 18 days in October. The fair has become one of the nation’s best craft fairs, consistently voted one of the Southeast’s “Most Popular Events”. What makes it so special?

The setting must surely help. Gatlinburg is nestled in the Tennessee Smoky Mountains on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most popular national park. Some 9 million visitors come to the area every year, which provides a strong economic base to support a market for unique, handmade products.

Images courtesy The Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair

Gatlinburg is a small town of less than five thousand inhabitants, yet it houses today the largest community of artists and craftspeople in the country. But Gatlinburg has always had its craft, flowing out of its Appalachian mountain culture.

Indeed, from Appalachian home industry and music of old, to the present day, it’s hard to say if history really ends when modern life begins, as artists carve their wood and melt their jeweler’s gold, or hammer out the unique sound of the dulcimer, now in a city of shops and entertainments.

Gatlinburg combines with neighboring Pigeon Forge and Dollywood, the theme park made famous by native daughter Dolly Parton, in presenting a year-round succession of fairs and festivals celebrating local arts and traditions, while also remaining a magnet for national and even international talent.

The Craftsmen’s Fair hosts around 200 booths of artisans with practically no duplication – everything is unique. This is a remarkable feat of selection, a tribute to Sam and Tracey Large who have guided the event for more than two decades. Sadly, Sam passed away in 2013, but the guiding hand remains.

With quality assured by a jury process that chooses only the best, craftspeople come from across the country to display and compete at the fair. The modern convention center’s almost 150,000 square feet of space allows ample room for the fair’s many wonders to unfold – including the necessary food and live music that marks every good festival.

The Fall event is exceptional because of the seasonal color change in the surrounding Smoky Mountains. The area contains a tremendous diversity of tree and plant life, and the spectacular fall colors are themselves a breathtaking artwork of nature, in a favorite time of year for return visitors.

Highlights of the Craftsmen’s Fair are the numerous demonstrations of skill made by the artisans as they get on with their work. They seem not only to welcome people looking over their shoulder, but enthusiastic to share their secrets and stories. It’s a friendly occasion, in a friendly part of the world, with lots to talk about.

If you stop in at the Craftsmen’s Fair, in between the daily shows of bluegrass, country and gospel music you can mingle with the artists and even commission a unique work. You can spend all day window shopping, or pick up unique gifts for others or yourself.

Every medium you can think of is represented at the fair, and possibly some you never thought of – from raku pottery to sculpted leather, from glass and oil paint to paper and canvas, metals and woods, gemstones, custom-carved everything including boxes to hold your treasures, even guns and knives and most certainly musical instruments. And more.

Even children are never bored at the Craftsmen’s Fair – in fact recently the fair has opened a kids area with hands-on opportunities across a large range of projects. And kids get in free, at this family-friendly event.

The Summer and Fall Craftsmen’s Fairs are held in the Gatlinburg Convention Center at Traffic Light #8. For more information see the Craftsmen’s Fair web site, and for recent pictures and news check its Facebook page.

Understated and laid back, the restaurant offers great service with very friendly staff and a kitchen that knows exactly what it’s doing.

Sandwiches may sound easy, but when everything is perfectly cooked and with complementary flavors – as is the case at Jed’s – they come into a world of their own. Jed’s is a mouth-watering kind of place, where literally every single thing on offer tastes great. The ingredients here are locally sourced and meats are roasted in-house daily, and served tender and moist.

There’s also a variety of beef hot dogs, and a scaled down kid’s menu of choice sandwiches, and even a tofu sandwich as vegans are not forgotten. Sides include slaw, beans and a homemade (and highly acclaimed) potato salad. If you prefer, there’s a Chef Salad on offer as well. Drinks include good fresh coffee for that breakfast treat and soft drinks.

Meats are available to buy by the pound, and once you taste them you may well want to get some to take back to the cabin, to eat once you’ve regained your appetite. Several desserts are on offer at Jed’s, if you have room, including some with seasonal fruits.

With so many great sandwiches, there’s still one last thing to highlight – a real Frito Pie, in case you haven’t been able to find one in a while. This comes as the Classic (except on a plate and not in the actual Fritos bag) and the Loaded version, with extra fixings. The chili is homemade and frequently praised by customers.

With a Grateful Dead decor (hence the restaurant name) and a chalkboard menu, Tennessee Jed’s has limited seating inside, with very pleasant tables also outside. The atmosphere is laid back and the food is the thing. A great staple for years in Gatlinburg, the restaurant opened a second location in 2022, also in Gatlinburg. Both locations are slightly hidden away, in two of our favorite, funky shopping areas.

The original Tennessee Jed’s is in the delightful Baskins Square Mall, a quaint outdoor mall with some unusual shops, often overlooked because it sits right across the street from The Village. It’s worth a look, and you won’t go hungry doing so, and not just from Jed’s. You can stroll into this mall from your walk along Parkway.

The second location is in Winery Square off of East Parkway, a place we’ve noted several times for the Smoky Mountain Winery, Whole Earth Grocery and the Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum. Now add Jed’s to the list of attractions there, going under the name of 321 (from Hwy 321, which is East Parkway). This one you can drive directly to, with parking available.

Note some changes, as of July, 2022. The original location (downtown) has now stopped serving breakfast, and extended its hours, starting and ending later in the day. It’s heavily focused on that lunch sandwich, but now available into the late afternoon and early evening. The new location at 321 Jed’s serves the famous Jed’s breakfast still, taking on the traditional hours of the original legend for breakfast and lunch.

The people and the kitchens are the same, and while we know it can be tricky changing hours or locations for a restaurant, we don’t worry about Jed’s – the food has kept a lot of us going over the years, and this will certainly continue as the operation spreads its wings farther afield in the town.

Gatlinburg Convention Center – Downtown Meeting Space

The Gatlinburg Convention Center is huge, modern and fully featured. And it’s in the middle of Gatlinburg, in walking distance of countless attractions, and surrounded by the gorgeous Smoky Mountains. Abundant parking and state-of-the-art electronics make every event run smoothly.

The Center has 160,000 square feet of space, with 67,000 sq. ft. exhibit space to host 350 booths. It has a huge ballroom and an auditorium with stage and audiovisuals, all combining for more than 9,000 theater seats and almost 2,000 banquet places – and a very powerful kitchen capacity to create delicious meals to feed all the attendees!

Images courtesy pf Gatlinburg Convention Center

With multiple meeting rooms, and flexible space to cater to groups of every size – from the dozens to the many thousands – the Convention Center hosts conferences, dance and cheerleading competitions, religious conferences, corporate functions and association meetings.

Famously, the Center also hosts the annual Arts & Crafts shows at times throughout the year, and locals and visitors alike are glad to have such a massive and capable space to wander though and shop the wares of the nation’s largest independent community of artisans.

Outside is Gatlinburg

While the inside of the Convention Center is truly impressive, it comes with the huge added bonus of being in Gatlinburg, a small town easy to walk around and packed with entertainments, eateries, shops and wild attractions.

Gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most loved national park, Gatlinburg is nestled in the mountains with natural beauty everywhere you look, and easy to get into, with scenic drives, mountaintop restaurants, tramway and gondola rides, and countless other natural attractions to explore.

So it’s not all business at the Gatlinburg convention Center – even a busy conventioneer has to take some time off, and outside is Gatlinburg and the Smokies to enjoy. The town offers more than 16,000 rooms for accommodations of every kind imaginable, from resorts to camping and with everything in between.

Our special favorites of course are the affordable luxury cabins in the hills all around and throughout the area, where groups, families and couples can enjoy a private home away from home amid dazzling scenery, and with full amenities, entertainments and pampered living built in.

Coming to Gatlinburg is a fun vacation treat at any time of the year, in any season, and coming to attend a special event at the Gatlinburg Convention Center is a great way to combine both pleasures in one.

Huck Finn’s Catfish in Pigeon Forge

Huck Finn’s Catfish in Pigeon Forge is a family business serving locals and visitors alike since 1995. Fans of this freshwater fish will find a satisfying seafood and Southern-style food experience at this all-you-can-eat restaurant.

The catfish is excellent, grain-fed and pond-raised in Mississippi (which means that the quality will be consistent, from the last time we went, to the next time you go), and actually has earned a certification from the US Catfish Institute, which not everyone gets.

Huck Finn's Catfish in Pigeon Forge

Huck Finn’s was voted Best Catfish in East Tennessee by Tennessee Magazine, and customers seem to agree, frequently calling this the most delicious catfish they ever ate. The restaurant also serves a wide range of quality dishes, appetizers, sides and combos.

The Food

Huck Finn’s offers a very flexible menu with several ways to order, and the portions are huge, so sharing for most items is highly acceptable. The sides that come with every meal include white beans and turkey ham, coleslaw made fresh daily, and hush puppies – plus a few more things, and all are delicious.

The “All U Can Eat” dinners are catfish or chicken, or a combo of both. Other entrees include several catfish, chicken and shrimp dishes, clam strips, trout, salmon and a Fish of the Day. Also offered are a country-fried steak, chopped steak, and southern pork chops – all of these are really good. And for the adventurous, there are frog’s legs, or Gator Tail bites from Florida alligator.

For a down-home place, the kitchen at Huck’s is clever with its flavors, offering more than one family secret recipe, and several different grilled seasonings to complement the meals. Many of the foods are offered either grilled or fried, and the fried dishes are not at all greasy, and in all, nothing here is mushy – everything is fresh with a crisp, sharp texture and flavor. Even the ordinary items are homemade.

Children have a kid’s menu to choose from, and the desserts include cobbler, pudding, sweet potato patties and ice cream.

Check the Menu for the full details.

The Place

As mentioned, you can do a lot of mix and match with all the items on the menu and the super friendly staff will advise you exactly how to do it to suit your group and taste best. Even when it’s busy the wait staff manage to get everything on the table fast, and cater to each guest personally.

The dining room is open and spacious, and with a casual atmosphere. Huck Finn’s also offers delivery, take-out, and curbside pickup and you can order online.

If you can still walk when you leave (those huge portions again), check out the  gift shop section of the restaurant. You can find tee shirts, hats, magnets, koozies, stickers, and some food items that you can take home.

Smoky Mountain Trout House in Gatlinburg

For over 45 years, Smoky Mountain Trout House has proudly served Gatlinburg seafood, steak, and pasta dishes. Their 10 different rainbow trout dishes are the star of the show for sure, although it’s also a popular place to grab a double cheeseburger.

All the trout comes from local sources, taking advantage of the bounty of the Smoky Mountains. The historic building adds to the dining experience (with good parking across the street). The place is small but with two floors, and the friendly and efficient service will have you feeling right at home.

Smoky Mountain Trout House in Gatlinburg

A favorite with locals, the restaurant also won the Travelers’ Choice Award from Tripadvisor in 2020. Winning this award points to their endless hospitality for locals and tourists alike along with all their top-notch menu items.

Memorable Building, Great Food

Smoky Mountain Trout House opens at 3pm for a late lunch or early dinner, and serves until 9pm most days, unless customer traffic fizzles out before then, when they’ll close their doors early. So, you definitely don’t want to wait until the last minute to come get a bite to eat.

They do not take any reservations, although they prefer that you call ahead when planning to dine in a group of five or more. Since it’s walk-in only, you’ll want to be ready for a bit of a wait for a table to open up. The wait can go well past 30 minutes during the height of the tourist season. It’s worth it.

The historic building has the classic fish house design, adding to the appeal of dining on ultra-fresh seafood. The rustic decor has a homey feel and gives a nod to some of the mountainside cabins surrounding it. Truly friendly service makes it easy to get cozy while you await tasty home-cooked food.

Serving Smoky Mountain Favorites

For the full dining experience available at the Trout House, it’s best to bring a big appetite. The appetizers are tasty, and you’ll want to start with one (or more!) before moving onto the main course and dessert.

When it comes to their starters, go with their Trout Fritters, for sure, especially if you only want one starter. A house specialty, this dish starts with fresh trout combined with onions, peppers, and potatoes. They put the fritters in the fryer until golden brown before serving them up with their homemade dill sauce.

If that’s not quite your style, you can’t go wrong with the Fried Pickles, Fried Mushrooms, or Wisconsin Cheese Curds. The restaurant serves non-alcoholic beverages, local and imported beers, and has a full wine list.

Whenever trout goodness calls your name, just set your sights on their 10 distinct rainbow trout dinners. With its cornmeal breading and classic sides, The Eisenhower is a house favorite. Other dishes include blackened, grilled, broiled, and even stuffed and smoked trout.

The fire-grilled steaks at the Trout House are very good. The Ribeye is acclaimed, but the New York Strip and Sirloin may be your choice. Deep-fried catfish and shrimp, grilled chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, and cheeseburgers round out the menu. There ‘s also a handful of selections made just for kids, so all ages can enjoy their visit to the fullest.

Although it’s tempting to fill up on appetizers and entrees, save room for dessert. Otherwise, you might end up missing out on Chocolate Lava Cake, Key Lime Pie, and Coconut Cream Pie.

Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant & Farmhouse Grill

Just a few minutes up the road from Pigeon Forge, Applewood Farmhouse holds the title as the oldest restaurant in Sevierville, and you’ll feel the history as you drive up to the homey, farmhouse-style buildings. Once a working farm with Revolutionary War roots, Applewood now boasts two restaurants. The original Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant occupies the old farmhouse on the property (renovated many times over since its first days, of course), and Applewood Farmhouse Grill was built just up the road to accommodate even more guests as Farmhouse popularity grew.

Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant & Farmhouse Grill

Images courtesy of Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant

You’ll also find the Apple Barn Cider House on the same property, where you can sample various delicious apple hard cider varieties brewed on site, and explore a carefully curated gift shop. The Restaurant or the Grill will make just as many memories, though, from the moment servers place a steaming basket of apple fritters on your plate – which is right before you even get started.

Those homemade apple fritters come standard with breakfast, lunch, or dinner, served up as frequently as most places serve bread. Many visitors say they’d come back just for those perfectly spiced, crispy balls of apple goodness, but the rest of the menu can hold its own, and then some.

Farmhouse Restaurant menu favorites run the gamut of Southern-style staples. Come for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch, and expect excellence, whether you choose Biscuits Benedict or fried catfish. The pot pie, old-fashioned chicken and dumplings, and country fried chicken with gravy are all favorites that keep locals and visitors coming back again and again, but you’ll also find lighter options like Cajun grilled catfish, roast turkey, as well as excellent soups and salads.

The sides might be the best part of each meal. Rich, hearty homemade soups, salads, sweet potato casserole, and fried okra top the list of favorites. Each meal also comes with Applewood julep, cinnamon muffins or fritters, and homemade apple butter. If you need a hearty plate of comfort food in your life, this is the spot.

Save room for dessert, for sure. Try the homemade apple pie with house-made, homemade vanilla ice cream. If you’re a fan of apple pie, you’ll love this home-grown iteration. The banana pudding and peanut butter chocolate chip pie are also powerful contenders.

The Farmhouse Grill a couple of blocks away serves up many of the same favorites as the original restaurant. The menu is a lighter selection with a few unique tastes of its own, and it offers up an impressive array of options. It’s often a bit faster to get in and out of this place to if you’re in a hurry to get out the door for a day of exploring Sevierville, or to see all the things available in this Apple Valley grouping.

You’ll find Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant nestled on (surprise!) Apple Valley Road, just beside a bend in the Little Pigeon River. It’s easy to access either from Pigeon Forge down the road, or from the heart of Sevierville, just south of the Sevierville Tangier Outlets center. There’s plenty of parking even during the busiest seasons, and the whole Applewood conglomeration is worth a stroll through..

Insider tip: in the Restaurant, ask to sit in the sun porch room when you arrive. The atmosphere is a bit quieter and more intimate, and expansive windows offer lovely natural light and views of the trees outside.

All the Apple Valley Establishments

The Apple Valley riverside enclave contains several places to know about. As the map below shows, in strolling distance between the Restaurant and the Grill are a number of establishments. Connected in one sprawling building are the Apple Barn Cider House, with its Cider Bar next door for sampling on site, as well as the General Store with all good things to purchase.

Included here too is the Candy Shop, where the kids can go crazy watching hundreds of different confections being made. And the Apple Valley Creamery is here too, which we include in our short list of the Best Ice Cream in the area. Lots of reasons to linger here.

Next door to this is the Apple Barn Winery, part of the Wine Trail in the area (as well as the Cider House, by the way), and vintner of some unique apple and berry wines, including the famous Southern sweet wines, and others from the region. Right next door to this is the Christmas and Candle Shop.

So it’s quite the exploration to visit here – be prepared to browse, to sample, to shop – and to refuel at either of the fine restaurants flanking the spread. And then maybe take a stroll along the riverbank and admire the lovely view.

The Atrium in Gatlinburg: A Family-Style Diner Serving Up a Breakfast Feast

Looking for a hot, fresh breakfast? Stop by The Atrium in Gatlinburg before you spend the day exploring. The Atrium has been a Gatlinburg staple for upwards of 20 years, and it’s a favorite local breakfast spot. Serving up a good variety of breakfast favorites from a kitchen that still believes in home cooking, The Atrium has something for everyone – but their specialty is pancakes. Portions here are huge – come hungry or with a crew.

The Atrium in Gatlinburg: A Family-Style Diner Serving Up a Breakfast Feast

Images courtesy of The Atrium

The Food

Breakfast at The Atrium is served every day until 2 pm (from 7:30 am), so even if you sleep in you won’t miss the window for the breakfast you’ve been craving. Whether you order up the baked apple pancakes or the M&M pancakes, you won’t be disappointed by the fluffy, golden discs that arrive at your table piping hot; in fact, you’ll find such a wide array of pancake options on the menu that you might find yourself coming back again and again to sample more of their offerings.

Expect very generous serving sizes; sharing isn’t out of the question here. If you’re more interested in protein than loading up on pure pancakes, the Atrium also offers the full spectrum of eggs, including eggs Benedict, breakfast meats, omelets and more. One of the most-requested combo plates, the Happy Hiker, features eggs, bacon or sausage, and either pancakes or waffles to round out the plate. The kitchen here knows about bacon and doesn’t skimp on the meat portion. But you can also get vegetarian and vegan here.

Balance out your pancakes with home fries or grits, and you’ll be in breakfast heaven. Is it a lot of carbs? Yes. Is it worth it? Again, yes. It’s hard to go wrong with the offerings here. No matter what you choose, you’ll be set for a first meal of the day before exploring all that the Gatlinburg area has to offer.

Though the breakfast is consistently good, The Atrium’s lunch menu offers an excellent variety of familiar options as well. From chicken strips to BLT’s to burgers, you’ll find it here–served up promptly, with a smile. You won’t find any out-of-this-world dishes; this isn’t a specialty brunch destination. But you will find a quick, casual meal, good cup of coffee, and reasonable prices – an excellent combination.

The Place

The friendly and authentic atmosphere adds to the appeal of The Atrium, already impressive for its food. This diner-style cafe is located right beside a (man-made) waterfall. If you’re lucky enough to score a window seat, you can enjoy the view along with your mouthful of pancakes and syrup. Don’t hesitate to ask if they have window seating available when you walk up.

The Atrium is fairly small and with limited parking, but there’s free parking next door at the motor lodge and paid parking across the street. It’s well known and regarded in town, and isn’t as easy to spot as many of the other attractions on Parkway unless you’re looking for it, but sometimes you’ll find yourself waiting for a table if you visit during peak breakfast hours on the weekend. It’s worth the wait.

The Incredible Christmas Place – Open All Year in Pigeon Forge

The Incredible Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge offers thousands of the seasonal items you want for the Christmas celebrations, AND it’s open all year round, so you can plan your last-minute things long before the season hits.

Image courtesy of the Incredible Christmas Place

Many visitors to the area make a stop at the Christmas Place, even in the heat of summer, because it’s such a useful one-stop place to pick up all the items that you need every year but don’t always find when the Christmas rush is on. And you can have them ship your items home for you.

And if you’re in the Smokies during the Christmas season, why not set up a lifelike artificial tree in the cabin, complete with lights and ornaments, to go with the snow on the mountains all around? In December, as the day approaches, you’ll find lots of last-minute deals on these things, as well as a chance for a photo op with Santa.

The Christmas Place offers several themed selections of items to fit your decor – one of which is the Christmas Cabin designer theme, by the way, with red truck and ski lodge ornaments, pine cone berry stems and many other ornament, garland and ribbon designs to add to the ambience of your cabin.

Other themes include Elf, Gnome, Farmhouse, Jack Frost, Bells, Snow, North Pole, Smoky Mountains, Shimmer Lights, Pets, Cartoon, Sweets – the list goes on, and all with items to match the theme for all the decoration requirements.

There’s a wide variety of Christmas Stockings available here also, ranging from traditional to funky, and with many pet-shaped stockings for that family friend.

The ornaments are high quality, as with all the products here, and cover a vast range of themes, running the gamut from traditional to whimsical, to pure magical, and bound to bring a smile. You can shop here for ornaments and accessories that include angels and religious themes, animals, ballerinas, birds, bells, gnomes, baby shoes, beach, patriotic, musical, gingerbread, cartoons, sports, Santas, proverbs, snowmen, snowflakes – the list here goes on pretty far also.

You can personalize many of the ornaments with individual and family names, for an extra special gift-giving and memory-making flair.

The lights available at the Christmas Place are pretty impressive, more than just a simple string of bulbs, these lights also embrace different themes, with many of them more like a light show or a star display. Ornaments feature in some of the light arrangements also – Batman is included, not to worry, along with Mickie and Minnie.

The artificial trees, by the way, look very realistic, minus the pine needle debris – a useful feature for shipping home or decorating your rental cabin. They range in size fr5om small and cozy at around 3 feet tall, all the way up to 12 feet tall. You can also get them already set up with lights, for a one-switch Christmas from the one-stop place.

If you’re getting the impression that the Christmas Place has so many things that you really need to visit to check it all out – well, that’s our point. It’s an experience to browse the store just to see all the possibilities for Christmas celebration that you may not have thought of, and there’s a lot of browsing there, much of it glittery!

One of the first places you come to in Sevierville is Tanger Outlets. The largest outlet mall in Tennessee, Tanger hosts over 100 shops, with all of the top name brands such as Gap, Hillfiger, Lauren and all the shoe, clothing and accessories stores you’d expect.

Another of the main shopping areas in Sevierville is Governors Crossing Mall, with restaurants, a movie theater and outlet stores. This venue hosts some of the less famous brands and can be a place for bargains.

Yet another area is Sevier Plaza, another outlet mall that is off the beaten track and less crowded, with lots of smaller shops and an Ollie’s Outlet and a Roses Express, two great places to check for bargains.

This fun little town also host a great number of antique shops, and there are galleries and specialty shops everywhere you turn also. One of the more notable galleries is the Robert A. Tino Gallery. The artist has a long standing reputation for artworks unique to the Smoky Mountains and hosts a craft show each year that is a big draw.

Keep an eye out for Smoky Mountain Knife Works, a more than 100,000 square foot showroom billed a s the world’s largest knife showplace. The Peddler Steakhouse in Gatlinburg: Quality With Mountain Flair

The Peddler Steakhouse bills itself as a classic steakhouse built on tradition – and in the more than 30 years since its founding, it has become a Gatlinburg favorite. Well regarded by locals and tourists alike, The Peddler offers an intimate, cozy dining experience that checks all the boxes: great service, exceedingly high quality food, and incomparable atmosphere.

This isn’t a budget-friendly stop, but it’s a memorable one.

The Peddler Steakhouse in Gatlinburg: Quality With Mountain Flair

The Food

The Peddler is one of the more expensive date night restaurants you’ll find in Gatlinburg, but it’s well worth the expense. Splurge on appetizers and desserts while you’re there, as well; they are famous for a reason! When it comes to appetizers, it’s hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, but some of the most popular options are oysters on the half-shell, fried cheese sticks, and shrimp stuffed mushrooms.

The steak is excellent: perfectly aged, never frozen, and grilled over Tennessee hickory charcoal. Steaks can be custom-cut at your table, and each cut is cooked to specification every time. Other entrees of note include grilled salmon, portabella chicken, and fresh rainbow trout. There are several appetizing side dishes that you can order a la carte or interchange with the entrees. Many of the dishes can be prepared gluten-free also.

Can’t decide? Opt for a combination plate and choose a petit steak and a serving of salmon, chicken, or another entree as well. For the younger set, a well-curated kid’s menu offers mouthwatering offerings perfectly suited to most children’s palates.

The salad bar (included with every entree) is massive and exceeds all expectations. It’s constantly refreshed and cleaned, and it offers an impressive array of farm-fresh greens and veggies of all colors and shapes please even the most selective of salad aficionados. You can mix in custom sides as well and make a fabulous meal in its own right if you wish.

If you’ve saved room for dessert after all those offerings, Kristi’s Chocolate Cake is a fan favorite (and large enough to serve two or three). The Peddler Mud Pie is another house-made confection that wins rave reviews year after year. All dessert portions are quite substantial, making sharing both practical and delicious!

The restaurant serves a good range of wines (you can bring your end for a corkage fee), as well as beers, and has a full bar that also offers some specialty cocktails on the menu. The Peddler is very popular and fills up quickly at peak times – especially weekend evenings. Although they don’t take formal reservations, they do take call-ahead seating requests, so if you’re hoping for a window table, it makes sense to give them a call before you drive over.

The Atmosphere

When you walk through The Peddler’s Doors, you’ll feel like you’ve come home – if home is a beautiful mountain lodge set for company. The well planned interior design has aged well and, of course, much of it has been updated over the years. You’ll get the impression of a warm, inviting mountain lodge just waiting to welcome in highly-anticipated guests.

Whether you’re on a date with your significant other or out for a nice dinner with the family, you’ll love the intentional, warm lighting and the impression of homelike (but definitely not homely) elegance. Request a table with a view of the river, and you’ll enjoy the added benefit of a burbling creek view just outside.

The Peddler Steakhouse is located just a block over from Parkway, at the southern end of town, close to the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s nestled in the trees and overlooking the Little Pigeon River, with a nice getaway ambience, and friendly and attentive service.

The Park Grill Restaurant in Gatlinburg: Rustic Lodge Meets Upscale Ambience

The Park Grill is a lunch and dinner restaurant situated right at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Sister restaurant to The Peddler steakhouse, Park Grill offers meals ranging from upscale dining to down-home comfort food, and the excellent kitchen creates tasty dishes. A kids menu as well as vegetarian and vegan fare are offered.

Image courtesy of the Park Grill

The menu boasts a wide array of upscale steakhouse classics, as well as some down-home Southern comfort foods. Favorites include rainbow trout, New York Strip, surf & turf platters, and to-die-for shrimp and crab bisque. An expansive salad bar offers crisp, fresh produce and a huge array of toppings.

The large building  feels like a welcoming lodge, carefully designed and constructed from reclaimed, dead-standing spruce trees, local stones, and some great architecture. It was built to impress, with soaring cathedral ceilings and gorgeous views at every turn, and it fits the Smoky Mountains ambience perfectly.

Expect the feel of a traditional mountain steakhouse. Think dark woods, stone walls, and a relatively quiet atmosphere (unless you’re seated at the bar). Visitors have been known to spot bears from the windows; that’s how at home in nature you’ll feel at this location.

The atmosphere, while on the upscale side, is also family friendly. A children’s menu ensures everyone in your group will be happy with their meal (mac and cheese and chicken tenders, anyone?). Plus, they’re not snobbish enough to turn away guests who’ve spent their day thoroughly enjoying the mountains. If you’ve spent the day hiking in the GSMNP, a top-notch dinner is very well deserved, even if you haven’t had a chance to wash the dirt off your shoes.

The Park Grill is way more than attractively arranged timber and rocks. Praised by locals and visitors alike, it’s earned the reputation as an excellent purveyor of both comfort food and upscale cuisine. Not sure whether you’re in the mood for fried green tomatoes or filet mignon? The Park Grill has got you covered. And its team manages to do it effortlessly and consistently.

Signature dishes include moonshine marinated chicken, which takes the humble chicken dinner up several notches in terms of flavor and quality. Moonshine marinated chicken is also available on a plate with New York strip, and that combo consistently earns rave reviews from visitors. The rainbow trout is hard to beat, and the sides – from the garlic mashed potatoes to the sweet potato casserole – are an experience in themselves.

If you visit for lunch, you’ll be met with a big selection of sandwich and other lunch meal options. No salad or sandwich is too humble to be delicious here; even the fried cheese and bologna sandwich is a star in its own right. The Park Grill does the basics well, whether you’re in the market for a BLT or a sirloin, and that’s one of the reasons it’s so successful.

Most dinner entrees are in the $25-40 range, so don’t expect budget meals when you stop here. But in our experience, a stop is well worth the time and money. Quality ingredients, quick service, and friendly, helpful staff are hard to beat, especially when the food is this consistently good.

And because it’s located at the end of the Gatlinburg Strip, just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance, it’s particularly well suited to start or end a day of outdoor adventures. This is a popular restaurant, so make a reservation online or call ahead for a table – but walk-ins are welcome and can usually be seated without too much of a wait.

Shopping at Lumberjack Square in Pigeon Forge

Lumberjack Square is a conveniently located refuge from the bustle of adjacent Parkway in Pigeon Forge where visitors can enjoy top-notch dining, shopping, and adventure, and with plenty of free parking. The Square offers a pleasant ambience with the feel of a town square, like walking around a downtown area. There’s even a town hall clock.

Tranquillity in the midst of Adventure – Image courtesy of Lumberjack Square

Landscaped niches and benches make it perfect for taking the weight off your feet between the adventures and just hanging out for a while, watching bungee jumpers, or wondering who just fell in the water at the Lumberjack Feud. And among the eclectic boutiques and shops around the square you can even find popcorn.

Dining

Lumberjack Square is surrounded by three notable restaurants, Smoky Mountain Brewery, Calhoun’s, and Five Guys, . The Brewery offers its own craft beers (as well as bar cocktails) and tastings, in a sports bar atmosphere, with burgers and sandwiches, dips, salads, pizzas and calzones – and fish and chips!

Calhoun’s leans to the steak-house style, as an upscale mountain lodge, offering steaks and chops, barbecue, burgers, plenty of sides and salads, and also fish and chips – your lucky day if you crave this fine meal at the Square.

Five Guys has made its fresh burgers and fries a signature meal across the nation – no freezers in the restaurant, only coolers – and other American sandwiches and menu items. It offers outside seating too that shares in the atmosphere of the Square. There are other specialty foods around the Square also.

Shopping

Lumberjack Square offers an eclectic mix of retail shops that ranges from Harley Davidson to Birkenstock, with gift shops, clothing, jewelry, decor and specialty shops, including over 200 flavors of popcorn – the best in the Smokies. The Shops at Lumberjack Square Facebook page is a good way to keep up with the latest offerings. There’s also a unique art gallery of long standing, as well as a movie theater and a mini-golf course to add to the variety here.

Adventure

Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud is a huge draw for Lumberjack Square and the venue anchors the shopping center. The current venue highlights a re-envision of an earlier show that was performed indoors. Today’s Lumberjack Feud show – which debuted in 2018 – takes place outdoors in a 350-set grandstand theater that is outfitted for rain or shine

Formerly known as Walden’s Landing Old Town Square, the shopping complex was renamed to Lumberjack Square when Paula Deen’s Lumberjack Feud opened.

Along with watching the authentic lumberjack competitions which include all sorts of physical feats, visitors can also head to the adventure park and try their own hand at challenges. Fun adventures are found here, and include a zip line roller coaster (first in the country), an obstacle course, tree climbing, log rolling, bungee jumping, and much more! Definitely not your average adventure park experience.

Location

Lumberjack Square is located at 2528 Parkway, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863, convenient to the growing complex of entertainments at the northern end of Pigeon Forge. It’s accessible not only from Parkway but also from Teaster Lane and Hwy 321, Wears Valley Road. See our guide to Getting Around and Shortcuts & Back Roads to see how conveniently located the Square is, at the crossroads of multiple adventures.

The Fox and Parrot Tavern: an English Pub in Gatlinburg

As a good way to take a break from the bustle of Gatlinburg, the Fox and Parrot Tavern is a great option for a tasty and relaxing meal. Serving up traditional English pub fare, with every meal made to order – and be warned that this is slow food, not at all fast – the Fox and Parrot Tavern is a wonderful place to have a drink and wind down from a busy day.

Owned by Brian Papworth, who has worked hard to create a traditional British pub environment (and who has since also created the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub), the Tavern regularly receives rave reviews from those who can search it out, tucked away as it is along the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community Trail.

Images courtesy of the Fox and Parrot Tavern

The location (see below) is off the beaten track, which is appropriate for this other-worldly haven – check the map and look for the sign to turn off of Glades Road (the Arts Trail).

As a great break from fast food and quick-turnaround restaurants, The Fox and Parrot Tavern is a great example of slow food, where you’ll enjoy a drink or two while your food is being freshly prepared from scratch. A quaint pub with antique decor, the Tavern provides the best of British comfort food at a good price. The staff and owners are known for their friendliness, and while alcohol is served, including a wide range of amazing ales and beers, it’s entirely family-friendly, including if you bring your four-legged companions.

Food & Drink

And now for the part you’ve been waiting for – the menu! Let’s start with drinks, as you’ll want to unwind a bit while waiting for your fresh food to be prepared. The Fox and Parrot Tavern boasts a whopping 34 options, including popular favorites such as Newcastle Brown Ale, Magners Apple and Pear, Guinness, Harp lager, Elysian Space Dust IPA, 1911 Raz Cider, Yazoo Hefeweizen, Boddington’s Bitter, Sam Adams, and a wide range of additional selections, many of which may change out based on the season, the distributors – or from Brian finding a fabulous new brew he wants to give a try.

Why not try some appetizers while you’re waiting? Guests rave about the Scotch eggs, which for the non-native is a hard-boiled egg wrapped in Scottish pork sausage, which is then cooked. But there are many other great possibilities to consider as well, some of which could almost be a meal on their own. Welsh Rabbit is toasted bread that is covered in beer cheese sauce featuring Newcastle Brown Ale, alongside traditional British chips.

For something a little more light and cultured, get the Ploughmans Lunch, featuring sausage, cheese, celery, tomato, onion, and fresh beer bread (as well as the English spelling of the plow). There are also chicken tenders, parrot wings, bangers and mash, chips and cheese, Hadrian’s Wall, and traditional British chips with malt vinegar or Worcestershire sauce.

For the main course? There are so many delicious possibilities, including Cornish pasties, fish & chips, Reubens, steak & mushroom pies, shepherds pie, poachers roll, scallops when available, Bubble & Squeak (delicious!), or corned beef with cabbage, onions & potatoes. All meals are served with traditional British chips, except for the scallops and the bubble & squeak, which are served with fresh beer bread.

The kids menu features more traditional American fare including beanie weenies, chicken tenders, grilled cheese, peanut butter & jelly, cheese sticks, and doodles & knees, which are spaghetti noodles covered with melted cheese, and all meals come with British chips.

If you’ve saved room for dessert after all this, there are a range of UK favorites to eat there or take for later. These include English trifle, Scottish shortbread, Eccles cakes, bread pudding, egg custard, and everyone’s favorite dessert to mock, spotted dick. But the sweetness doesn’t start with dessert, as you’ll be treated like a beloved local the entire time you’re in The Fox and Parrot Tavern. For a quiet late lunch after a busy morning or a quaint, quiet dinner after a day on the town or in the woods, this Gatlinburg gem is miles from home, but tastes just like it.

The Rampant Lion Celtic Pub in Gatlinburg

With one British pub under their belts (the Fox and Parrot Tavern) Brian Papworth and his wife Dana decided to go with a more Celtic flair, opening the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub in Gatlinburg. The list of liquors has grown immensely over the years, now numbering around 200 different spirits.

Focusing on a range of worldwide whiskies, the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub offers American Bourbon, Scottish, Irish, Australian, Welsh, Canadian, and even Japanese whiskies, along with a wide range of 80 wines, 50 gins, 22 draft beers, and traditional Celtic foods, all delivered with tremendous hospitality and friendliness.

Atmosphere

But don’t rush through the door expecting a quick slap of shepherds pie on a plate with a dram. When you get a drink or a meal at the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub, you’re in for a slow and satisfying and experience. Located on the top level of the owner’s original photo gallery and dark room, it’s only a mile and a quarter from East Parkway, putting it in a beautiful, quiet setting that you don’t have to drive forever to get to. In the fashion of traditional Celtic pubs, it’s entirely family-friendly, and the atmosphere compares with community pubs you’ll often find in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, and the Isle of Man – places where the entire family may go for an evening out in the community.0

Your food is cooked fresh, so it will take longer than the average Gatlinburg establishment, but there are board games and cards to help you pass your time, as well as the friendly company of Brian and Dana, and the rest of the crew. Regular community events offer opportunities to discover even more culture, so take a look at their calendar, whether you want to hit the annual chili cook-off with a twist or enjoy Guy Fawkes Day, Boxing Day, or Burns Night with more traditional fare. This is definitely one of Gatlinburg’s hidden gems, with a wealth of atmosphere, scrumptious authentic fare, and a beverage selection that can’t be beaten.

Food

Customers agree that everything on the menu is good, so it’s up to your personal preference. Start out with tasty Scotch eggs, a prawn cocktail, sprats on toast, or bangers and mash. Or go lighter with a big garden salad or bread with oil and vinegar.

For your main course, you may want to sample the fish and chips, that great ex-pat longing. But don’t let it keep you from ordering any of the numerous other tasty entrées, including Cornish pasties, pan-seared lamb, steak and mushroom pie, shepherds pie, poachers roll, or deep-fried oysters, among others. For a budget restaurant price, you’ll get a serious foodie experience.

Though you’ll get some sweet attention as soon as you get through the door, the dessert menu will sweeten you up even more, from the less-sweet brie with preserves, to the stronger Tira Mi-Su (that’s tiramisu, Italian with a Celtic lilt) and its Celtic cousin Scottish Tipsy Laird. Keep going with the death-by-chocolate Chocolate Overload Cake and slightly tropical pineapple cake. If you’re not familiar with Scottish Tipsy Laird, it starts out as ladyfingers soaked in alcohol, much like the tiramisu, but in this case it’s Drambuie – a Scottish whiskey liqueur with honey, spices and herbs – which is then topped with raspberries, homemade custard, and sliced almonds.

When you’re at the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub, you’re treated like family, and there’s no push to get you out the door so that they can seat someone else. You’ll enjoy the authentic pub atmosphere, the wonderful fare, and the company you’ll find there. Don’t forget the beer cheese dip – it’s a favorite!

Ole Smoky Distillery in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge

Ole Smoky means only one thing in Gatlinburg, and that’s Tennessee moonshine. Ole Smoky Moonshine is one of the most recognized brands in the craft spirits industry. It was the first federally recognized moonshine distillery in East Tennessee – the revenuers finally bowed to the inevitable, you might say – and it operates several distilleries in Tennessee, most notably in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

In Gatlinburg, Ole Smoky started at The Holler, which we wrote about back in the day: Shine on at Old Smoky Distillery. It still operates that great venue, which has seen its share of legendary musicians and performers over time – be sure to follow the Soggy Bottom Boys link to the wonderful Holler performance of Alison Krauss and Dr. Ralph Stanley. As we remarked at the time, bluegrass and moonshine go together like, uhm, bluegrass and moonshine

Ole Smoky also has another outlet farther along Parkway, as well as a popular distillery in Pigeon Forge. All these locations serve not only as production facilities (which sell online and ship all over) but also as tourist delights, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the world of moonshine production. The distilleries blend traditional Appalachian methods with modern techniques – and all of that science and craft comes down to small thimble-sized samplings that millions of people have enjoyed

Corn liquor – moonshine – has a distinct taste, very smooth on the throat and with a compelling, almost appetizing flavor even in its basic, natural state. But it lends itself to all kinds of additional flavorings too, which is why you want that small thimble, because you’ll want to sample several of the creations. Indeed, distilleries specialize in giving tours of the product, along with the colorful and storied history of the drink, and the congenial “shinetenders” serve up much fun and entertainment along with the nectar itself. Moonshine sampling is a fun thing that many visitors to the Smokies put on their bucket list to enjoy at least once during their stay.

The original Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg will always be known famously as The Holler. Said to be America’s most visited distillery, it’s located in the heart of Gatlinburg and offers guests the opportunity to learn about the history of moonshine in the Smoky Mountains. Visitors can see the distillation process up close, from mashing to fermentation to distillation.

On the menu at The Holler are moonshine tastings – for a small fee, guests can sample a variety of moonshine flavors. The selection often includes classics like Original Corn Whiskey and White Lightnin’, as well as flavored shines such as Apple Pie, Peach, and Blackberry.

Or, try some Specialty Moonshine Cocktails, crafted with moonshine, showcasing creative mixes that highlight the versatility of the liquor. And don’t go away empty-handed. Pick up your favorite moonshine flavors by the bottle – have them shipped home if you want – along with branded merchandise such as apparel, glassware, and accessories.

Wait there’s more! By the way, distilleries no longer stop at moonshine and many of them produce some very distinct products such as an array of whiskies, which you can also sample at Ole Smoky. You’ll find the aged spirits at The Barrelhouse, Ole Smoky’s other distillery 3 blocks along Parkway. Here you can enjoy many whiskey tastings, including some selections only available at this one distillery.

Ole Smoky Moonshine in Pigeon Forge

Ole Smoky operates The Barn at The Island in Pigeon Forge, that all-day wildly popular shopping and entertainment complex. Similarly to The Holler, the Ole Smoky Barn offers an extensive range of moonshine tastings, including seasonal and limited-edition flavors.A variety of moonshine-based cocktails are available, showcasing unique recipes and flavor combinations. To wash all that down, in addition to moonshine, the Barn also serves a selection of local and craft beers, catering to a broad range of tastes.

Across all locations, Ole Smoky Distilleries prides itself on providing an engaging experience that includes live music, outdoor seating areas, and often, food trucks or snack options to complement the beverages. The atmosphere is designed to be family-friendly, with non-alcoholic options available so that everyone can enjoy the visit.

The old bootlegger days have given way now to the modern era. Ole Smoky’s moonshine distilleries in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge offer a lingering taste of that past in a charming experience combining Tennessee’s rich history of moonshine production with the modern craft spirit movement. For the spirits aficionado or the visitor up for fun in the Smoky Mountains, Ole Smoky is here for you.

Elks Plaza in Gatlinburg: An Oasis Off Parkway

Elks Plaza is a small oasis right off Parkway in Gatlinburg, and in a little world of its own. It hosts benches under shade trees, a collection of unique shops, a few onsite parking slots for shoppers – and the best restaurant in town. Easy to miss, but worth looking for, this little area hosts several treats.

Elks Plaza is across the street from Ober Gatlinburg, and fifty yards or so to the north, tucked up next to Howard’s Steakhouse. Barely a half-block wide, if that, the Plaza is a U-shaped enclave, with Old Smoky Gem Mine fronting one arm on Parkway, and Somewhere In Time fronting the other.

Hot Diggity Dawg features all beef hot dogs lavishly dressed with extras and sides, BBQ sandwiches, sausage, Guinness brat, nachos, cheese, chili and a real Frito Pie. Ice creams and sodas wash it all down, and there’s a pleasant table outside as well.

Next door the famous House of Jerky offers free samples of its huge variety of meats and flavors – worth the tasting if you’ve never tried. Around the plaza is also Once Upon a Time, a children’s gear and toy store, as well as Tierra’s boutique with some nice clothes, and Giftville for souvenirs, Smokies t-shirts and other gifts items.

The Old Smoky Gem Mine offers a vast assortment of gemstones and paraphernalia for the enthusiast, while Somewhere in Time offers your portrait photographs wrapped in an earlier age. Hidden away also in the plaza is the Elks Lodge, so now we know how the Plaza got its name.

The star of the show here is undoubtedly Best Italian Café & Pizzeria at the rear of the plaza. This is a great locals favorite, a hidden gem of Gatlinburg – we’ve written a full feature story on the place in our Dining section here: The Best Italian Café and Pizzeria: a Gatlinburg Hidden Gem – this restaurant is undoubtedly worth making a target for lunch or dinner.

Elks Plaza is a quaint little place with not a huge amount of shopping, but eclectic shops with reasonable prices for quality items, and the ambience is a surprising delight, for being immediately on Parkway, an oasis of calm. There’s no guarantee that any of the parking slots will be open if you drive there, but the opportunity is a nice touch, in a downtown where parking can be tight.

The Trolley stops close by, and there’s plenty of parking nearby for those who like the adventure that never gets old, walking along Parkway. And along that way there are the benches under the shade tree of Elks Plaza for you to get off the main drag for a bit, and enter a different world.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a year-round paradise for fly fishing, with more than 600 miles of streams that support wild trout. You can fly fish any time of year, in this beautiful national park, with no admission fee, and there are even some spring-fed waters that stay mild through the winter. State regulations and park rules do apply, and you need a license, which can be obtained online.

Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Townsend, on the Tennessee side of the national park, are home to fishing outfitters and guides for all levels of experience. You can rent fishing gear and find help to catch your limit and even to clean your fish!

Fly Fishing in the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg

The topography is varied, as with everything in this national park, which teems with wildlife and foliage – and lots of water. See our Smoky Mountain Fishing guide to the rules and best practices for fishing in the park.

The national park doesn’t stock fish, although Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge do stock selected streams with thousands of trout for the annual Trout Tournaments, which are organized by Rocky Top Outfitters, a full-service hunting and fishing outfitter in Pigeon Forge.

Gatlinburg has its own license for fishing within its limits, but for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a state license from either Tennessee or South Carolina is all you need. Check out our Fishing in Gatlinburg feature page for more information on fly fishing in that happening town.

Your visit to the Smoky Mountains is best enjoyed with a stay in a Gatlinburg cabin rental or Pigeon Forge cabin rental. We also have Wears Valley cabins to rent for your vacation stay, over on the Quiet Side of the Smokies, close to a park.entrance, and near some great fly fishing waters.

Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament

UPDATE 2023: The traditional Trout Tournaments have been canceled since 2022, and currently we don’t know if they’ll come back. The City of Gatlinburg now hosts a one-day event on the first Saturday in April, fishing the many Gatlinburg waters – see our guide to What’s Happening in April.

Smoky Mountain Trout Tournament

Twice a year, in the spring and the fall, the Smoky Mountain region plays host to an acclaimed trout fishing tournament that offers fun – and lots of fish – for all the family, and for anglers of all skill levels. Here’s everything you need to know in order to join in the fun, in some of the best trout streams anywhere.

The Smoky Mountains offer an abundance of cool, clean, flowing rivers and streams throughout the mountains and valleys.

Each year, the spring tournament is held on the first full weekend of April, and the corresponding fall tournament takes place on the first full weekend of October. Both of these tend to be times when trout fishing in the Smokies is at its best, with cool but not cold water temperatures and just enough sunlight to keep the fish active.

Each year, tournament organizers stock over 10,000 trout throughout 20 miles of some of the best local trout streams, including West Prong Little Pigeon River, Roaring Fork, LeConte Creek and Dudley Creek.

One of the best things about this tournament is that all are welcome to participate, regardless of skill level. Beginners and children are especially welcome, and there are even streams set aside for children-only fishing. There’s a first prize for largest fish caught and an equal prize for smallest fish caught!

There are over $10,000 in prizes each year up for grabs, including cash prizes, gift cards, fishing gear, and more. Tournament fishing begins each day shortly before sunrise, and all weigh-ins take place at Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge.

Keep in mind that anyone is eligible to register, but only registered participants are eligible to fish in the tournament. You can register in advance by going to the official tournament website hosted by Rocky Top Outfitters in Pigeon Forge, or you can register in person at Smoky Mountain Angler, 466 Brookside Village Way, on East Parkway in Gatlinburg’s Winery Square. Registration is also available by phone by calling 865-661-FISH.

All anglers are required to have a valid Tennessee fishing license on their person during the tournament, and there are separate licenses for locals and out-of-state visitors. See our requirements guide for a Fishing License for Gatlinburg and Tennessee, or to obtain a fishing license directly visit the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website.

Some of the important rules to know for the tournament are that only single-hook lures are permitted with one hand-held rod, and there is a five fish limit per person. You can visit the official Trout Tournament webpage for a full list of the rules and regulations.

The tournament streams are located just a short drive from our Smoky Mountain cabins, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet in the wilderness while staying close to the fishing action. See our guides to Fly Fishing in the Smoky MountainsFishing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Fishing in Gatlinburg – Where to Go, What to Bring, so that you can make the most of your time in this angling paradise.

The Smokies are known for their native brook and brown trout, and Gatlinburg and the National Park are crawling (or should we say swimming?) with over 900 miles of rivers and streams that are just waiting for you to cast your line.

Fishing Permits

Before you pack up your tackle box, however, there are local and state regulations that have to be observed. For example, children under the age of nine do not require licenses or permits of any kind, whereas adults must possess various combinations of local and/or state licenses. The requirements vary according to age and state of residence.

Whether you are fishing in city waters, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or other areas, proper licensing is mandatory.

  1. Gatlinburg City Permit
To fish in the streams and rivers within the Gatlinburg city limits, anglers need a special Gatlinburg City Fishing Permit. This permit is required for both residents and non-residents. It can be purchased at local bait and tackle shops, outfitters, or online. The permit is available for different durations, from daily to yearly options, allowing flexibility depending on the length of your stay.
  2. Tennessee State Fishing License
In addition to the city permit, anglers aged 13 and older need a Tennessee state fishing license to fish in the state’s waters, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Douglas Lake. There are various types of licenses available, including single-day, multi-day, and annual licenses. Non-residents have specific licensing options, so be sure to select the appropriate one based on your residency status and the duration of your visit.
  3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Permit
While a specific permit from the National Park Service is not required, anglers must adhere to the park’s fishing regulations and possess a valid Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license. It’s important to check the specific rules and regulations, as the park has designated fishing seasons and specific guidelines on catch limits and bait types.

Best Places to Fish

Once you’ve obtained your permit(s), you’re allowed to fish in many of the city’s waters including West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, LeConte Creek, Roaring Fork Creek and Dudley Creek. There are also two, designated children’s fishing areas which are heavily stocked with trout. These areas are located at North Gatlinburg Park, at the northern Parkway entrance to the city, and Mynatt Park, off Airport Road. Both of these sites are marked with signs which indicate the boundaries of the designated areas.

By the way, no fishing of any kind is allowed in Gatlinburg on Thursdays; this is the day that the city stocks its waters with trout. Also, between December 1st and March 31st, all trout caught in Gatlinburg must be immediately released.

Fishing is permitted in most of the National Park’s waters, except for those which are posted otherwise in order to protect certain species of fish. Both the National Park and the City of Gatlinburg allow only single-hook lures and flies as bait; no worms, corn or natural bait of any kind are permitted. As in Gatlinburg, proper licenses are required.

Here are some of more top locations for fishing:

  1. Little Pigeon River
The Little Pigeon River flows through the heart of Gatlinburg and is one of the most accessible fishing spots. It’s stocked regularly with rainbow trout, providing ample opportunities for anglers to catch these popular fish. The river is divided into two sections: the West Prong and the Middle Prong, each offering different fishing experiences. The West Prong is more suited for those looking for a calm and peaceful setting, while the Middle Prong is known for its slightly more challenging conditions.
  2. Mynatt Park
Located within Gatlinburg, Mynatt Park is an ideal spot for families and beginners. The park has a special children’s fishing area where the little ones can try their hand at fishing in a safe environment. The nearby streams are stocked with trout, ensuring a good chance of a catch. The park’s amenities, such as picnic areas and playgrounds, make it a perfect place for a family outing.
  3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to more than 2,000 miles of streams, many of which are accessible for fishing. The park’s waters are known for their variety of fish, including brook, brown, and rainbow trout. For those seeking a more rugged experience, the backcountry streams offer a chance to fish in less crowded areas, though these spots may require a hike to reach. Popular spots within the park include Abrams Creek and Little River.
  4. Douglas Lake
For a change of pace, Douglas Lake offers an expansive fishing experience with its 30,400 acres of water. Known for its bass fishing, the lake is a prime destination for those looking to catch largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as crappie and catfish. The lake’s extensive shoreline provides numerous access points, making it a great destination for boaters and shoreline anglers alike.

Both Brewery locations are adjacent to a Calhoun’s, which is another tasty destination. Calhoun’s offers a more southern cuisine, and complements the food of the Brewery with smoked meats for those who have to have it smoked (and some days you do). And in Gatlinburg the Brewery is next door to Cherokee Grill steakhouse, so you’re spoiled for choice in this one block-area.

Both restaurants and settings in both towns offer great locations as well as food and drink options. If you’re a little lost for directions, take a look at our guides to Getting Around and Shortcuts & Back Roads to see the lay of the land.

The Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge locations of Smoky Mountain Brewery are open for business daily, serving lunch and dinner.

Winery Square in Gatlinburg: Filled With Hidden Gems

Winery Square is a little area off of East Parkway in Gatlinburg, only slightly off the beaten track and packed with delights from several hidden gems in terms of food, drink and pure fascination.

The square is anchored by Gatlinburg’s first winery, Smoky Mountain Winery, established in 1981 and still going strong, serving tastes of the many great wines of Tennessee, including some unusual fruit wines and some drier wines aged in oak. Highly awarded, the Winery is a long-time favorite of return visitors, and a welcome surprise for those who stumble across it.

To get to the square, take East Parkway at Light #3 and turn right on Pine Lane, where you’ll see the turret  of the Winery at the end of the street. Park anywhere, and proceed to explore.

If breakfast or lunch are on your mind, you have two excellent choices in Winery Square. For some of the best sandwiches in town (no exaggeration), try Jed’s 321. Newly opened in 2022, this is an outpost of Tennessee Jed’s, farther up on Parkway itself, which has long satisfied locals and visitors alike with its amazing locally sourced meats and mouth-watering treats.

If you want a broader range of foods or vegetarian and vegan options, take a look inside Whole Earth Grocery, an all-natural café and store. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday, offering soups, lentils, salads and cheeses, wraps and sandwiches. The café also makes a powerful range of health drinks and shots, while the store is packed with natural beauty and health products, including supplements and homeopathic remedies.

Also in the square is the one-stop place to pick up any kind of jelly, jam, preserve, syrup or sauce ever thought of, as well as all kinds of pickles and excellent honey choices. This is Smoky Mountain Farms Jelly House, which carries a stunning array of products, and all of the jams and jellies home made. People say to stop in simply to smell the aroma, but once you start browsing you’ll see concoctions you never thought of, from apple butter to Moonshine Jelly (!), and everything is high quality.

If you want salt or pepper on any of the food we mentioned, you may want to visit the very unique Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum while you’re in the square. This is truly a unique museum, the only kind in the world (apart from its other collection in Spain) with over 20,000 different sets of shakers from around the world. If you like to grind your pepper, you’ll enjoy the massive pepper grinder collection too. This is a great way to entertain the kids as well as impart the history and lore that attaches to the collection.

And the visit is not complete to Winery Square without noting the largest spinning and weaving shop in the Southeast, the Smoky Mountain Spinnery. In such as crafting area as this, the Spinnery products are in high demand, which the shop has satisfied for two decades and more now. It offers all the supplies, equipment and fabrics you could ever need, to spin, weave, hook, crochet, knit felt or dye. And the Spinnery offers classes for every aspect of the fiber arts, from every level of skill. If you want to make your own fabrics, or just try out a spinning wheel, this is the place.

You will find many more shops and services in and around Winery Square, including pizza, BBQ, and outdoor adventure supplies and opportunities, including the Smoky Mountain Angler for fishing supplies and guide tours (also see our guides to Fishing in the Smokies), and Smoky Mountain Whitewater Rafting just next door.

We wanted to show you some of the unique highlights so you can decide if you want to make the short trip over there, or not miss it when heading east on Hwy 321 (East Parkway). You’ll see the various operations listed as being on Brookside Village Way, Cherry Street or East Parkway, but it’s all Winery Square, and less than a mile from Light #3 on Parkway itself.

Roaring Fork Road, by the way, is just past Winery Square, on the right, if you’re interested in taking the unique Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail for an excursion after your visit. And to find some useful shortcuts in this part of Gatlinburg,  check out our guide to Shortcuts and Back Roads.
